Cindy Crawford Said Big Age Difference Ruined Her Marriage to Richard Gere

Love & Learn 1

Cindy CrawfordI don't know how any woman manages to get divorced from Richard Gere, but Cindy Crawford managed it. When it comes to older men crushes, he and George Clooney have got to be high on my list (with Daniel Day-Lewis tops). Anyway, Cindy opened up about their four-year marriage and how it was doomed from the start. And what she said made a lot of sense.

Cindy blames the relationship not working out on their 17-year age difference. The supermodel was 25 when they married; Gere was 42. I guess it's totally foolish to ask what a 42-year-old man wants with a 25-year-old -- the answer is pretty obvious, especially when that quarter centurier looks like Cindy -- but age gaps that large always leave me shaking my head. Plus they started dating when Cindy was just 21. Anyway, Cindy told US Weekly:

I just think your twenties, for women, is such a time when you're starting to come into your own and feel your own power and connect to your inner strength, and it's hard to do that -- it's hard to change -- in a relationship, because what one person might have signed up for, all of a sudden, you're not that anymore. I think I was more willing at 22 to be, like, 'Okay, I'll follow,' but then you start going, 'Well, I don't want to just follow -- I want to lead sometimes and I want to walk side by side sometimes.'

The 20s are a big growth time, that's for sure. And if you're with someone significantly older, who has already done his or her fair share of growing and might be in a phase of "I just want to settle down and ride things out," then it can be tough going. Plus, the couple just aren't going to have the same touchstones, the same references, the same level of maturity. I'm not saying it can't work out, but it's just going to be more difficult. I'd say if one party is 40 and one 60, it's got a better chance than one 20 and one 40.

People change all throughout their life -- and the key to a long union is being able to change together, or at least tolerate when one partner is changing. Trying to do that when one person is two decades younger or older is difficult. Wonder what this means for May-December pairs like Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Thomas, Elin Nordegren and Chris Cline, and Al Pacino and his much, much, MUCH younger girlfriend, Lucila.

Cindy's second marriage to Rande Gerber, who is three years older, worked out much better. They've been married for 15 years.

Do you think a 20-year age gap is too much?
