Oooh, exciiiiting! E.L. James has a new book coming out! But it's not exactly what you might expect from the notorious Fifty Shades of Grey author. It'll be straight-up non-fiction -- an advice book!
Fifty Shades of Grey: Inner Goddess (A Journal), due out in May, is a how-to guide. No, she's not attempting to teach us all how to write a hit BDSM book (whew!). Instead, the book will feature "James's professional tips ... interspersed with blank, lined pages for readers to set down their own ideas, or 'inner goddess.'" The journal will also feature a foreword, excerpts from Fifty Shades of Grey, and an inspirational playlist that helped her write. (Click to see a preview here.) Grrrreat.
Much has been said and written about what a horrendously bad writer Erika Leonard is. And now the woman's being given a platform to advise us all how to write?! Eeesh, talk about cringe-worthy.
To be fair, this journal just sounds like more Fifty Shades franchise kitsch. Or an inspirational "tool" for fans. As Vintage Books publisher Anne Messitte puts it:
[James's] personal story as a writer is inspirational to many women, and journaling has been an important part of her creative process from the start.
All right, I can buy that. There's a chance this journal will really encourage Fifty fans to creatively express themselves in a way they never have before, which could be really liberating. So yay for that. But at the same time, this can only serve to make fans more antsy for more steamy fiction. Because inspirational or not, this journal is definitely not the followup we've been waiting for!
