Damn you HBO and your clever marketing ploys. Everyone who's anyone knows that season 3 of Game of Thrones, pretty much the best show on television, is premiering on March 31. And we've said it countless times before, this one is gonna be the best one yet, based on the source material, A Storm of Swords. But when HBO debuted the poster for the third season, it was rather disappointing due to its simplicity. It kinda looked like something a middle school student could sketch.
But then the tables, oh how they did turn. Never for a second should anyone doubt the geniuses behind this fantasy series. What was just a boring shadow of a dragon is being used in an amazingly epic way that might bring a tear to even the most cynical, misanthropic eye. It's pretty incredible.
Of course, HBO, just go ahead and put up that poster on a freakin' building. How could I have ever doubted them? Just goes to show the sheer scale and scope that this third season has to offer. Now LA gets to look up in the sky for a flying dragon any time they pass HBO's California headquarters.
It really doesn't get much better than that. Can't think of a better campaign, especially after they fooled (some of) the fans with a rather lackluster poster. I'll never call anything that HBO does "simple" again. Who knows what they'll superimpose onto large buildings and skyscrapers next? HBO wins this round, which I hope they'll continue to do forever.
What do you think of this twist on the Game of Thrones season 3 poster?
