We've covered the fact that most Hollywood breakups seem to prompt one of two reactions: Not Even Remotely Shocked Because Who Didn't See THIS Coming, and Oh Noooooooooo, right? I'm going to go ahead and file the big bummer news that Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have split under that latter category, because aw man. Sucks.
I don't know why it sucks so much, exactly, except that they seemed like a legitimately awesome couple, and we all wanted Michelle Williams to find a great guy after dealing with the heartbreak of Heath Ledger, and Jason Segel seemed like a sweet and funny partner, and it looked like he was totally bonding with Williams' adorable daughter Matilda, and OKAY FINE IT'S POSSIBLE I'M A LITTLE TOO INVESTED IN THESE PEOPLE.
Williams and Segel were a pretty low-key couple, with only a few (probably intrusive) photos snapped of them out and about. They were reportedly introduced by Michelle Williams' friend Busy Philips, and first got together at the start of 2012.
They avoided going public for quite a while, even when photos of Segel's phone -- adorably covered with stickers of Michelle blowing kisses with the phrase "I Heart U" -- circulated online. In April Segel finally confirmed their relationship to Extra, although he kept things short and sweet:
I think we would just very much like to be happy. That's all I'm going to say about it.
Williams also recently acknowledged the public support for the two of them, saying,
If people are happy about it that makes me feel good because in my head the opposite is often true — that people fault or blame you for things. That’s really painful. You wish they would just want you to be happy, for your kid to be happy, and for you to have a good life and do good work. Any kind sentiment that the world can feed back, well, I won’t turn it down.
Although they were just on vacation in Cancun together a month ago, sources say it was too hard to keep up a long distance relationship (Williams lives in New York, Segel is in LA).
Of course, that's what the tabloids are saying, and who knows what really happened. I'm just sad to hear of the split, because I was totally rooting for these guys. They both seem like neat, non-Hollywood-type people and I don't care if it DOES make me sound creepy and overly invested, I totally hope they can work things out.
Are you bummed to hear that Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have broken up?
