Have you ever longed to see the cast of Downton Abbey perform a British boy band song? Boy, who HASN'T, right? Well, thanks to some insanely meticulous video editing, now you can enjoy all your favorite Downton characters (Mary, Matthew, Bates, Anna, Carson, Thomas, Lord Grantham, the Dowager Countess, EVERYONE. Even Sir Richard Carlisle!) "singing" One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful."
I've seen video mashups before, but this one really goes above and beyond. I mean, I have absolutely no idea how someone goes about creating something like this. Is there special software that helps locate certain words? Is it MAGIC? At any rate, with the sole exception of swapping "the way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed" for "the way that you flip your hair gets me flabbergasted," every single lyric is included in the Downton version. You have to see this thing, even if you hate One Direction -- or Downton Abbey, for that matter.
The mashup was created by comedian Richard Sandling, who made something similar a while back when he combined Mad Men with Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."
He posted the following on his website:
One of the main problems facing people making mash ups is that no matter how good they are, it can often be the case that if people aren’t familiar with the show or music then they don’t give the video a watch. So, as an experiment, we thought it would be interesting to try and combine two things that pretty much everyone knows & loves -- Downton Abbey & One Direction.
Two great tastes that taste great ... together? Okay, it wouldn't have occurred to ME to combine these two pop culture phenomenons, but the results are fairly striking. Check it out:
It's true that watching that made me feel a teeny tiny bit like I was maybe having a seizure or stroke or something, but it's damned impressive, isn't it? Plus, I'm still mourning the finale, so it's kind of nice to see all those familiar faces again. Since I have to wait until JANUARY 2014 for the fourth season. *weeps*
If you're unfamiliar with the original One Direction song, here it is for comparison's sake.
Personally, I think I like the Downton version better, what about you?
