Spoiler Alert! If you haven't seen the season 3 finale of Downtown Abbey yet STOP READING NOW.
If you did faithfully tune in for the Brit hit Sunday night, you are still reeling from Matthew Crowley's sudden death. His life was cut short in a car accident as she drove home after meeting his son -- and all-important male heir -- at the hospital. It was heartbreaking. However, casting news for next season may quickly turn his wife Lady Mary (played by Michelle Dockery) into an very merry widow with a sexy, new love interest.
According to the Mirror, her new man may be Tom Ellis -- and he is absolutely gorgeous. After getting a look at this guy, Mary may be saying 'Matthew who?' Writer-creator Julian Fellowes says that season 4 will pick up six months after the accident and she won't be lonely for very long.
Of course, this wasn't the ending Fellowes' envisioned for the show's most celebrated romance. Apparently Dan Stevens (who played Matthew with such grace and charm) wanted out of the show for professional reasons. In recent months, he has appeared on Broadway in New York City and has two movies slated for release in 2013, so his devotees will be able to catch him on the big screen eventually.
As for the show, I have no doubt that Ellis' character would win just as many hearts, though US viewers are probably not familiar with him. The majority of his credits are from British television series. And he isn't just a pretty face -- he's a father of three and married to another UK star Tamzin Outhwaite. He hasn't officially been offered the role yet, but reportedly did very well during his audition and is on a very short list. Fingers crossed he gets it.
Do you think Tom Ellis will be a good love interest for Lady Mary?
