OMG you guys, did you know Hugh Jackman is gay???? I mean, he loves musical theater, and his wife is 13 years older than he is, so he's totally obviously undeniably gay, right? Too bad his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, who married him in 1996, doesn't seem to realize he plays for the other team! He's been fooling her for SO LONG! The poor woman!
This is the kind of talk that's been swirling around Hugh Jackman for years. For whatever reason, people seem convinced that he's secretly gay and has created an elaborate family life to cover up the fact that he prefers men. Personally, I don't buy into this story, but I can sure imagine how annoying it must be to keep dealing with it (sort of like poor Richard Gere and the gerbil story). In fact, Jackman finally admitted recently that his wife is sick and tired of the persistent rumors about his sexuality.
His wife briefly addressed the speculation in 2011, downplaying the amount of attention she and Jackman give it:
Hugh and I don't pay much heed. It's kind of tragic that these people have nothing better to do than gossip about people they don't know.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, though, Jackman said that the rumors have grown tiresome -- especially to his wife:
Just recently, it bugs her. She goes: 'It's big. It's everywhere!'
As for Jackman's X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, she thinks the gossip about Jackman is ridiculous:
I have seen him with Deborra since the beginning of their trip to Hollywood, and I've been on five movie sets with him and have never seen him stray, have never seen him eye anyone. I met him when he did Oklahoma! [at London's Royal National Theatre in 1999]. He was genuine, hugely talented. He was in love with his wife that day and still is.
I feel bad that Jackman and his family (he and Deborra have adopted kids Oscar, 12, and Ava, 7) have to deal with the ongoing chatter about his personal life. I mean, truly, it's none of our business WHAT his sexuality is, but I also don't believe the rumors are true. I think he's a super-hot actor who's been married to an older woman for over 17 years, and that's such an anomaly in Hollywood people like the salacious story better.
It's too bad people can't just accept what he says at face value. He seems like a very genuine, interesting guy, and I love how he talks about his wife:
... when I met Deb, it was 10 times better than my single life. She was very beautiful. She was unbelievably fun -- this energy, this spirit -- irrepressible. And she had a confidence in herself. I had a massive crush on her instantly.

If I had a dollar for every time someone called me gay, (im not. Though I am bisexual, & there is a difference) I would be one rich bitch! I wish people would leave eachothers' sexuality alone. Its nobody's business unless we *collective* choose to make it public.
I never heard that rumor until my former boss said he was gay when I remarked how gorgeous I thought he was. I didn't believe it then and I still don't believe it. It does sound like he's crazy about his wife and that's very sweet and uncommon in Hollywood. I have to say though he is prettier than her. I'm not being mean, it's true and he isn't the only one. Robert Redford's ex wife wasn't as pretty as him, Jon Bon Jovi's wife isn't as pretty is him, I could go on and on. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder but these examples are accurate if you ask most people. Of course there are also lots of beautiful women in Hollywood who marry men who aren't nearly as attractive as they are. It exists in the "real" world too you just don't notice it as much.
