We all fight weight gain as we get older -- even country music stars. A few years ago, Tim McGraw had packed on the pounds, but then he kicked his butt into gear and got back into shape. His toned, shirtless body is in the new issue of PEOPLE, where you’ll be able to ogle his eight-pack abs. Yes, I said eight-pack.
Tim says that he decided to get healthy for his career and his family. In an interview, he said:
No one wants to grow up to be a rock star to sing the same song over and over again in a studio ... the reason you want to do this is to be in front of thousands of people, playing that guitar and doing what you love. And when I'm on stage, I want to feel good.
His family life was also an important factor not only in his increased workouts, but his decreased drinking habits. He’s been married to fellow country singer Faith Hill for 16 years, and the couple has three daughters. He gave up drinking in 2008, because he realized “it was getting out of control.”
“People were getting worried about me,” McGraw said, adding that it was getting to the point where it was “negatively affecting” his loved ones. The 45-year-old admitted that his relationship with his kids was what ultimately made him give up the sauce. He said, “I felt quitting was something I needed to do. I didn’t feel I had any moral high ground with my kids in the long run.”
The now-studly husband and father works hard to maintain his trim physique -- a typical day includes hitting the gym after taking the kids to school. On the road, he’ll do two hours in the gym in the morning, and more cross-fit training before he hits the stage. Wowza, I guess all that working out explains that eight-pack!
Don’t think this star doesn’t like to have his fun anymore -- the dude loves his cheeseburgers and sweet tea. “I like to eat,” he said. “I like food. That is one of the reasons that I throw that extra hour of working out in.”
Way to go, Mr. McGraw! It’s awesome to see a rock star take inventory of what’s important in life, and then do what he needs in order to succeed where it matters -- with his family.
