January Jones Reveals Betty Draper's 'Weird' Fate in 'Mad Men' Season 6

TV Addict 8

january jones as betty francisAs much as we Mad Men fans love to love Don Draper, we love to loathe Betty  Francis (formerly Draper). In season 4, she was absolutely abhorrent as she ripped into Sally again and again. Then, in season 5, whilst struggling with emotional overeating, a weight problem, and obvious envy for the new Mrs. Draper, Megan, she was a bit more sympathetic. But still, Don's ex-housewife is still no one's favorite. But that doesn't mean we can't wait to see what season 6 brings for her.

In the wake of tons of buzz about the new season, which starts April 7, January Jones shmoozed with Vulture.com about what we can expect from her ice queen character ...

When asked what would happen to the character if Matthew Weiner let her call the shots, January didn't exactly answer the question (surprise, something she probably learned from Weiner), but her response about Betty's fate was still intriguing ...

It’s interesting to hear people's perspectives, because I felt like the first few seasons were rough, and then she's made steps in the last couple seasons to be happier, by leaving Don and marrying Henry and trying to be a better mom. And I think that she's in the best place we've seen her — but I'm not sure she'll ever be completely happy. I don't know if she knows how to do that. She's one of those people who's always searching for something else, so even if she finds it, I don’t know if she'd recognize it. And it's sad, because Henry's, like, a great husband and a great guy, and he took in her kids, and he's like this kind of perfect guy, and she's still searching for something.

Hmm. So, just judging from that, I'd venture to guess that we're not going to see the complete downfall of the Francis marriage just yet. Don't get me wrong. Despite being in the "best place we've seen her," Betty's probably still pretty darn miserable in season 6. As January notes, she's still "searching." For what -- or who? -- she wouldn't say ...

Though she did offer this juicy tidbit about what we can expect come April:

I'm in it more. I can only say that, I think. We're halfway done — and I've gotten to do a lot of weird stuff.

Strange! I don't know what I could possibly see Betty doing that would be "weird." Doing LSD with Roger? Eating pot brownies (seems like something season 5 Betty would be all about!)? Hitting up a swingers party with Henry? Confessing her undying love to Don?

Huh! Guess we'll just have to wait and see ...

What do you think will happen to Betty in season 6? What kind of "weird stuff" do you think January is alluding to?

Who says we love to love Don Draper. Men like him were a big reason why a lot of women ended up like Betty.

Could be technical weird stuff, too, like filming in reverse sequence, flashbacks, dream sequences... you get it. I'd expect that she'd try new stuff 'cause she just lost weight and... weeeee... anything goes. Think Ep. 4: 'Betty does Woodstock, and... a woman.' The 'ice queen' you refer to may take a big plunge somewhere.

Not everybody loves a jerk like Don and hates Betty. Don is the the reason Betty is the way she is.

Betty comes to the dark side and dates another woman. Oh I wish haha. She's the only reason I watch the show.

Betty is actually my favorite character. I think it's interesting how both her and Don seem to have the perfect lives on the outside but are both so unhappy on the inside. Is it wrong of me to want to see Don and Betty get back together? I know their marriage was a mess but it was fun to watch. Plu when Don was happy, he was really good to her. I miss seeing that.

I don't think that Don is responsible for Betty being Betty. However, that is no excuse for his infidelity. I find Betty a very interesting woman and regret that they had the characters divorce. They provided interesting drama between the two. I wish that we could see more of her.

I love the Betty character and especially enjoy the show when she is featured. Glad to see her slimming down and blond again. Can't wait to see her on the campaign trail with Francis.

When two dysfunctional people unite in marriage, EXPECT a form of Don and Betty.

Just look at the Clintons - another dysfunctional family.
