For a little Friday fun, may I present 2 U an amusing reignited feud between a couple of the most beloved names from your '80s childhood: Prince and Madonna. Apparently these mononymous stars have had a long-standing beef, going way, WAY back to when they briefly dated in 1985 and collaborated on Madonna's "Love Song" from her Like a Prayer album -- and in a recent interview with Billboard magazine, Prince snarked on Madonna yet again. Oh, and awesomely, he also ripped into Maroon 5.

Prince's (I guess we're all calling him Prince again, right? Not that little special dingbat font?) grousing about Madge and Maroon 5 is pretty entertaining, but you've got to see what Madonna publicly said about him a while back. It's so funny, I almost want to forgive her for being pretentious and irritating and having a fake accent and passive-aggressively bitching about Lady Gaga. ALMOST.

So apparently Prince was telling Billboard about his later releases with Warner Bros. and the unhappy relationship he had with the label, and he took a side trail to bitch about his label partner at the time:

It was always about Madonna. She was getting paid, but at the same time we were selling more records and selling out concerts on multiple nights.

Prince also didn't mince words when it came to his feelings about Maroon 5, who recorded a cover of his famous song "Kiss":

Why do we need to hear another cover of a song someone else did? Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what's already there.

Well, I haven't heard Maroon 5's version, but I love creative cover songs. I mean, look at Pomplamoose or Jonathan Coulton. Or even the person who remixed R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" with one seemingly small but significant change. A fresh take on the original IS art, in my opinion.

Also, ahem.

But anyway, back to the bad blood between Madge and Prince. Check out what she said about him in 1994, when recalling one of their dates:

[He] was a little troll. He was just sipping tea, very daintily. I have this theory about people who don't eat. They annoy me.

HAAAA. Oh, I love it. I mean, even though I'm pretty sure Madonna eats, like, kale and fermented soy beans. Before her daily lemon/Botox colonic, after her 120-minute yoga routine.

Prince is scheduled to receive the 2013 Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas on May 19. As for what he's planning to release in the future, music-wise, he says,

I don't do albums anymore...I do songs.

EYEROLL. Ugh, gotta love musician egos. Now let's just hope Adam Levine, famed Twitter loudmouth, goes nuts when he hears about this.

What do you think about Prince's smackdowns? Do you agree with his statement about cover songs?
