Beyoncé did an amazing probably-lip-synced rendition of the National Anthem at Obama's Inauguration ceremony yesterday. And yes, I'll be sore about that for the rest of the day. But here's some cheery news: Alicia Keys will sing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLVII, and she's going to sing it like we've never heard it before.
Keys told MTV News, "Oh my goodness, I'm crazy excited about it. Being able to do the national anthem and actually set the whole game off is a dream come true. It's really exciting. It's a historical moment, that day, so I'm looking forward to really doing it my style and my way, and I'm looking forward to really making it great." Uh oh, is Alicia hinting that she may change the lyrics to the National Anthem?
I'm asking because when she performed for the Commander in Chief's Ball last night, she sang "Girl on Fire" -- but she sang it as "Obama's on fire." What if "doing it my style and my way" for Alicia means changing the lyrics? "Whose red stripes and gold helmets, through the perilous fight/O'er the Ravens we watch'd, were so gallantly flying ..."
Oh I'm just kidding. Alicia Keys is not going to change the lyrics to the National Anthem! I think maybe this is just her way of saying, "Hey I'm no Beyoncé but I've got my own thing going on!" And her version will be unique -- especially if it's really LIVE and not lip-synced. Oh, I'll forgive Beyoncé eventually. But I'm looking forward to Alicia's version of "The Star Spangled Banner."
