Although Hollywood is busting at the seams right now with plenty of up and coming, talented young actresses -- Jennifer Lawrence, Lena Dunham, Shailene Woodley, etc. -- Emma Stone is a standout. I wouldn't even categorize her in the "rising star" category anymore, actually ... With the success of recent flicks Easy A and Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Amazing Spiderman, and the fact that she got to co-star with Ryan Gosling again in The Gangster Squad, Emma's more like a rising America's sweetheart. But it's that "good girl" rep some may believe she's hoping to shed by appearing on the February cover of W Magazine sporting just-had-sex hair, a black strapless bra and a black leather jacket pulled down around her arms.
Oh noes! Does this uber-sexy photo mean Emma Stone's trying to go for a raunchier image? And/or maybe she's vying to play Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey! With Ryan Gosling as Christian?!
Ha, okay, that's just wishful thinking right there. (But hey, I'm not the first to think that would be totally brilliant casting!) At any rate, a play for Ana's not what this cover photo is all about. It's not even all that risque. And we're not talking about someone who had a squeaky clean image suddenly doing an X-rated 180. Emma's taken on sexy roles for a while now. She may have played a teen in Easy A, but she's 24 now.
It might just be her way of reminding us of that. That she's a grown-up ready to transition from smart comedies, witty rom-coms (and the occasional action flick) to edgier, even more serious roles. Like Gangster Squad, while not at all that critically acclaimed, is just the kick off to this new, much more grown-up phase of her career. She even told W, "It's kind of exhilarating to be a part of projects where there's nothing funny or lighthearted." Good for her!
So, you know, come to think of it, this proves she wouldn't be right to play Ana at all! She's made it clear now -- she's not that innocent.
