I'm about to nominate a celebrity for a Courage of the Year Award: Nigella Lawson, who stars on a new cooking show on ABC called The Taste. It wasn't that Nigella ate some creepy crawler or wrestled her bacon into the mud before serving it up -- no, it was that Nigella told the execs at ABC that she refused to have her tummy airbrushed out in a billboard for the series. Can you imagine? A celebrity with a belly! Holy crikey, that's brave.
Nigella, who appears on the ad in a red dress and sports a distinct belly -- the kind that normally reaps tons of "Baby Bump!" headlines -- wrote on her blog:
Although it was very thrilling to think of being up on a billboard in LA and around the States, I was very strict and English and told them they weren't allowed to airbrush my tummy out. Wise? Hmmm. But that tum is the truth and is come by honestly, as my granny would have said.
Considering Nigella is starring in a show not about losing weight, but about eating, this seems pretty straightforward. Still, it's not common to run across this atttiude in Hollywood. Some celebs, like Kate Winslet, have been open about their hatred of Photoshopping, but most just go along with it. Probably even insist on it.
I'm not sure I would have done the same, to be honest. Go on, get that belly outta there! would have been my take on it. But if more celebs start insisting on this kind of thing, maybe we'll all finally have a bit more realistic idea about what the female body actually looks like.
What do you think of Nigella's belly?
