Oh, hullo Downton Abbey fans. Have a seat. Are we all ready for season 3? Managed to avoid reading those spoilers? Excellent. Now, it's been a long while since we left off from season 2. And I have to admit -- I'm kind of scrambling to remember where we are with all the DA drama. And some of you are just checking the show out, wondering what all the hype is about!
So I thought a little cheat sheet might be helpful. Where we've been, where we are, and maybe a bit of where we're going. But not TOO much about where we're going! Here's what you need to know before you watch the Downton Abbey Season 3 premiere Sunday night.
Lady Mary Crawley and Matthew Crawley: Mary is the eldest daughter of Robert, the Earl of Grantham. Matthew is the surprise heir to Downton Abbey and the family fortune. After much drama and longing glances and denials and a dreadful accident, these two finally got engaged at the end of Season 2.
John Bates and Anna Smith: John is Lord Grantham's valet. He and Anna, head housemaid, fell in love but faced many barriers. They married quietly in season 2, but John is in prison for the murder of his former wife. He's probably innocent! At any rate, we're hoping he gets off because he and Anna are pure in heart and deserve happiness together.
Lady Sybil and Tom Branson: Sybil, youngest daughter in the Crawley family, eloped with Tom Branson, the family chauffeur AND A SOCIALIST!!! They are expecting a baby at the beginning of season 3.
Downton is drained: The Crawleys seem quite comfortably rich and fabulous, but in season 3 they experience financial hardship. Oh dear, what happened to all of Cora's lovely, lovely money?!?
Shirley MacLaine FTW: Perhaps you heard she's joining the cast as Cora's mother? Squee! Feathers fly with my other favorite, the Dowager Countess. By the way, I loved this interview with Shirley MacLaine.
There's more, of course. Middle sister Edith (the Jan to Mary's Marsha) learned to drive an automobile and is pining over disabled vet Sir Anthony. Scheming underbutler Thomas has just been made a valet.
I just wanted you to know that there are two posts about the major heart-breaking horrible, nasty, utterly unacceptable surprise in the Christmas episode. DON'T CLICK ON THESE LINKS IF YOU HATE SPOILERS. I'M WARNING YOU!
