A few months back, there was serious buzz that Angelina Jolie had expressed an interest in directing the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. At that point, when the book was still fresh in the zeitgeist, we would believe just about anything! Who wouldn't want to be involved?! But now that the dust has settled a bit, the short lists have gotten even shorter, and I'm guessing not just anyone is going to be considered to get on board.
Not that Angie is "anyone." Not at all. But is she actually interested in directing the highly anticipated flick?
Although experts on all things Fifty Shades claim Angie may be short-listed to direct, and beyond that, she's "the most desperate for the role." Supposedly because she felt slighted when she lost out on the part of Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook -- scored instead by youngin' Jennifer Lawrence -- and now she wants payback. And winning the director slot for Fifty Shades is the payback she seeks. Hmmm. Not buying it!
As much of a fantasy as it sounds to have Angelina Jolie behind the camera for the super-sexy film, I just don't see her having any genuine interest in it. Doesn't she want to brand herself as the movie star Mother Teresa? Only stepping behind the camera for films that have some greater humanitarian goal? And when she does deign to do something super-commercial, it's been an action flick. Nothing seriously sexy like Fifty! It's almost felt like she's been trying to shrug off her original reputation as a vampy Hollywood siren.
Furthermore, given who they've gone with so far (producers, screenwriter), it seems more likely that Universal is going to go with an up-and-comer, someone known for a small artsy indie flick from Europe or something like that. But hey, we shall see! If Angie has any interest whatsoever, the studio would be crazy not to at least sit down and have a tête-à-tête.
