Pretty sure each and every one of us had to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald when we were in school. Whether ya liked it or not, Nicholas "Nick" Carraway's narration of what happened to him and his neighbors during the Roaring '20s made this book one of the great American novels. And who wouldn't want to be neighbors with Jay Gatsby, who's super rich and hosts a bunch of fun, extravagant parties -- all for a woman whom he secretly still loves?
Of course, this opulence, intrigue, the tales of bitter lovers, '20s fetes, even, yes, murder would make for a great movie. Enter director Baz Luhrmann, famous director of Moulin Rouge! and Romeo and Juliet. His take on the '20s and Fitzgerald's classic tome is basically an orgy for the eyes. Just watch the newest, most awesome trailer below for The Great Gatsby movie and you'll see what I mean.
Here you go!
Looks great, doesn't it? Definitely has a Moulin Rouge! vibe to it ... okay, so, all right, maybe it's not quite as psychedelic. Granted, that movie musical was one people either loved or hated; I actually loved it, so I'm more excited than ever to see this. And you can't go wrong with a smoldering Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson, Carey Mulligan as the timeless Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick. Also gotta love the creative use of Filter's cover of The Turtles' "Happy Together" in the trailer.
I for one can't wait to see Fitzgerald's legendary tale come to life on the big screen through Luhrmann's eyes. The war scenes, the classic car chases, the affairs, the gorgeous mansion, the parties, the costumes ... it's gonna be quite a visual feast. The movie was shot in 3D in Australia last year -- even though it takes place in New York -- and is scheduled to come out May 17, 2013. Sucks we have to wait so long for this one!
