Scarlett Johansson's Hacker Gets 10-Year Sentence & Now We’ll Never Get His Juiciest Scoop
Just in case you're thinking about breaking into someone's email, better think twice. Especially if that person happens to be famous. Hacker Christopher Chaney, who broke into at least 50 email accounts -- a lot of them famous women like Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, and Christina Aguilera -- has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Ten years!!! That's more than a lot of murderers get.
Chaney used a pretty simple method to break into the email accounts of famous peeps -- he'd use the "forgot password" option and then answer secret questions, which, when you're famous, the answers to aren't that secret. He'd then monitor emails by having them forwarded to an account he'd set up. He described the feeling as, "You feel like you've seen something that the rest of the world wanted to see. But you're the only one that's seen it ... it was a rush."
Chaney says he not only saw nude photos of celebs -- a few of which he leaked online, most famously of pics Scarlett Johansson that she'd sent to her then-husband Ryan Reynolds -- but claims he also saw emails that made it clear that some of the "straight" actors he was spying on are really gay. And I totally don't want to know who those actors are. Right? You don't want to know, do you? Okay, I do. I'm dying to know. But it's none of my beeswax. But considering all of the juicy stuff this guy must know, he was pretty restrained. He could have sold a lot of it to gossip sites, but never profited from his hacking.
However, one can't ignore some of the more reprehensible stuff he did like breaking into one non-famous woman's email account and sending a nude pic of her to her father. What?! Why?!
While all of this is morally bankrupt behavior, the punishment is quite stiff for his crime. Perhaps the problem is that Chaney has been remorseful and blamed no one else, or nothing else, for his actions. Compare this to hacker Gary McKinnon, who will receive NO jail time after being accused of the "biggest military computer hack of all time." But Gary's lawyers were able to successfully argue that his Asperger's Syndrome made him do it. (??)
I guess it's one thing to break into military computers and another to break into Scarlett Johansson's nude pics!
Do you think his sentence was fair?
