'Sister Wives' Recap: Christine 'Didn't Know Men Could Be' WHAT?! (VIDEO)

by Jacqueline Burt on December 9, 2012 at 11:56 PM

sister wivesOkay, okay: Kody Brown isn't so bad ... for a polygamist. That's what we learned on tonight's episode of Sister Wives. The Sister Wives themselves, on the other hand, learned that some polygamists ARE so bad. Soooo bad. Because the Brown teens took it upon themselves to do a little pro-polygamy PR and hang with these other teens who ran away from THEIR polygamist families, and boy, did they ever hear some stories! Horrible stories. Not, however, all that surprising (at least for anyone who's ever seen an episode of Big Love): Controlling, distant, abusive father figures with 27 wives (seriously, no exaggeration); young girls in those creepy puffy-shouldered dresses being married off to still creepier old men. But you know what's weird? The Sister Wives DID seem surprised by the teens' stories. Huh?! How is that even possible?!

The entire Brown family seemed completely blown away by the fact that some dads just plain don't stick around. (Any kind of dad, not just polygamist dads.) Christine was so shocked she had a complete breakdown over the realization:

"I didn't know until this stupid trip ... It kills me thought they looked at polygamy as a blessing, not a tool to control ... I didn't know men could be bastards!"

Really, Christine?! YOU DIDN'T KNOW MEN COULD BE BASTARDS?!

Um, wow. That's just ... wow.

Anywhoooo ... the runaways aren't in those horrible situations anymore, thanks to an organization dedicated to helping people escape from abusive polygamist families called Holding Out HELP, but yikes ... those poor kids clearly have some serious baggage. Still, they learned something, too: Some dads actually do stick around.

Does it surprise you that the Sister Wives were surprised by the runaways' stories?

Yes, I am surprised.  Who hasn't heard the horror stories?  I know PLENTY of men who are bastards, including a father and two exhusbands, who aren't plygs.  I also know great ones.

I think she heard them and didn't believe it. Since she's lived with a multiple wives situation her whole life she probably thought they were all like her and the media was blowing it out of proportion. So I think she knew she just didnt know it was true.

Absolutely there are many bad men but alos some amazing ones. The trick is to realise that are far more good people than bad ones!

They're a bunch of naive fools these women. It's pathetic some of the crap they say sometimes. And of course she knows men can be bastards, what's was she born yesterday? And her husband is such a useless jackass, how can she pretend he's so amazing?? I can NOT believe he managed to hook 4 women, he has nothing going for him!

I believe that more what she was referring to was that the didn't believe the "Kingston" group was like the claims of the FLDS groups. The were under the impression the Kingston group lived much the same as the Brown's do. She also did not ever have an experience with a 'bad dad' nor did she ever see them around in her life so she did not know what that was like. It can be hard to believe in something you've never seen/experienced, same as the others that came from bad had a hard time believing that it could be good until they saw the Brown family.

How could they NOT know about the FLDS? Jeffs recently ordered 15 men in the group can have sex. he ordered businesses closed, predicted an apocalypse and told followers to be ready to go at a moments notice. recent information about a bed ordered to be specially made for the purpose of sexually assaulting hundreds of young girls. Polygamy is NOT all “sister wives” and  the Dargers. The law does "turn a blind eye" to FLDS polygamy as discussed in new book "plygs", a fact based journalistic view at the REAL world of polygamy.

I think they were more shocked by the fact the Kingston group was so abusive and controlling. They appear to be mainstream polygamist vs the FLDS. I do not think that Robyn was surprised at all. I know her ex and though I would never consider him abusive, I know some of the dads in the Pinesdale polygamist community can and have been abusive. Many of my friends from high school who were Pinesdale polygamist kids only have memeories of their dads showing up to beat, get money, or inpregnant their wives-having no relationship with their kids. These kids also might or might not know all their siblings which is where it gets tricky when people start getting married. I do not think the Browns held any illusions about what the FLDS is and what occures within that group.

There is a difference between polygamy like that practiced by the Browns and others like them, and what was seen. That is abusive, controlling, and in a lot of cases, it's pedophilia, because they'll force 13, 14, 15 year old girls to "marry" men 3 times their age. It's wrong, and sick, and criminal. The Browns are all adults, who entered into a "marriage" of their own free will, and who could leave at any time. Agree with it or not, there's a world of difference, and if that's the way that four consenting, reasonably intelligent, fully grown adults want to live their lives, then who the hell are we to judge them for it?
