Reason for Dennis Quaid Divorce: Is It Good Enough for the Kids?

GossipMonger 15

dennis quaid kimberly buffington-quaidThings seemed good in JulyLooks like Dennis Quaid is getting divorced -- again. Quaid filed for divorce from his real estate agent wife, Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, last week. The couple has been living apart for the past 6 months, and this is the third time the actor, now starring in the TV show Vegas, is giving up on marriage. He was previously married to actresses Meg Ryan (divorced in 2001) and P.J. Soles (divorced in 1983).

The couple, who has been married since 2004, has two children together, twins Zoe Grace and Thomas Boone, 4. Quaid supposedly wants joint physical and legal custody and has offered to pay spousal support.

But Quaid, 58, isn't the one who got this whole divorce ball rolling. It was Kimberly who wanted out of the marriage -- and we don't really blame her ... if what we hear is true.

More from The Stir: 10 Signs It's Time to Get A Divorce

According to TMZ, it's all because Quaid is a cheater:

A source connected with the couple say 'Kimberly is fed up with Dennis' cheating and wants out of the marriage. He's not a good husband.'

Kimberly initially filed for divorce back in March, and for whatever reason, had a change of heart. But 6 weeks ago, she again filed for legal separation. Cheating is no doubt tough on a marriage. There are some people who choose to forgive and go on (hello Hillary Clinton) while others who choose to break it off. It's even more difficult when there are kids involved.

This is a couple who has been through a lot with their kids. The twins almost died shortly after birth because they were given a massive overdose of the drug Heparin at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Moms married to cheaters are in a tough spot. They have to decide between their own happiness and their children's. No kid wants their parents to get divorced. Ever. So do you fake the happy marriage thing, overlook your husband's bad behavior, and stay together for the sake of the kids -- at least until they're in college when it might be easier on them. Or do you put yourself, your feelings, and your needs first? It can't be an easy decision to make.

The good news in all this for the children is that so far there is no nasty custody battle a la Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry. It seems Quaid and his ex are being civilized about sharing custody and knowing that kids need both their mom and their dad. We just hope the civility continues.

Would you get divorced if your husband cheated or would you stay together for the sake of the kids?

Some kids actually do want their parents to divorce. Kids aren't stupid. Happy parents make for happy kids. Depending on circumstances of the cheating, I would most likely leave. But I can't say for sure since I haven't been through it.

No one deserves to be miserable in their marriage. If the spark is gone and you are just friends with your spouse, I can see sticking it out for the kids depending on their ages. But being miserable for the sake of your kids can mess them up just as much if not more than a divorce.

OK...divorce is horrible on the kids but so is being miserable in front of them.  I only have one question.  Did Quaid cheat on Meg Ryan with her and was that the end of that marriage?  Just wondering because if that was the case then she shouldn't have been surprised he was a cheater...just saying, but I don't know the answer to the question.

Yes, Quaid cheated on Ryan for several years. Kimberly must have known this before she married Quaid but like so many women probably thought her guy would change for her. Dumb, but it happens.

Don;t think this will be a clean divorce. She has asked for primary physical custody, not joint custody.

Lets just hope he never gets married again and never has kids again!

And teach me children what? That its okay for someone to treat you like a doormat? Nope. Happy parents make happy kids. Whether its happy together or apart.

I disagree with the statement that it's her feelings vs the kids and it's what's better for her vs the kids. Staying in a bad marriage is bad for everyone, especially the kids!

As a child of divorced parents, I can say it's almost always better when one spouse is cheating to split up. Even if the parents are trying to hide it, kids pick up on it. Being in an unhappy marriage doesn't just affect you, it affects your children too.

We're sending the right message when we teach our children how to live happy lives thru examples of problem-solving and cooperation for the higher good. Actions have consequences. Sometimes that includes divorce.

The example this wife is sending to her kids is one of self-respect.  She is telling them that it is unacceptable to put up and shut up when you're being shit on.

Cheating, abuse and drug/alcohol abuse by a spouse are the only outs without working on it that I allow myself in a marriage. A person has to draw the line somewhere, and a dealbreaker is a dealbreaker. I also think a woman with money can afford not to eat shit every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, whilst ladies closer to the poverty line suffer for years longer in awful relationships.
