It's a magician's worst nightmare: You're on live national television and your magic trick goes wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong. That happened to magician Wayne Houchin the other night when he went on a TV talk show to promote his "Curiosidades" magic show in the Dominican Republic. Houchin -- who recently hosted a season of the Discovery Channel show Breaking Magic -- ended up having his head set on fire.
But apparently this wasn't just some magical mishap. Houchin claims that the host of the talk show poured burning cologne over his head -- on purpose.
The video of the incident shows a host from the show touching Houchin's head, which then bursts into flames. The show's crew rushed in to help, and Houchin was rushed to the hospital emergency room. He suffered bad burns on his head, face, neck, and right hand.
Apparently the TV host used Aqua de Florida cologne -- something used by shamen and witch doctors in the Caribbean as a voodoo cleansing agent (the implication being that Houchon's magic act and abilities are works of the devil).
Houchin posted on his Facebook page that the incident was not part of the act, and wrote:
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country full of beautiful people. Despite all that has happened over the past couple of days, our team has not forgotten why we're here: to spread joy, wonder, and love through the performance of magic and illusion.
Houchin's doctors are "cautiously optimistic" that he will fully recover with no scars.
Warning: The video is short, but graphic:
