Kim Jong-Un Mistakenly Named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ -- Makes Sense to Us!

OMG 1

Clearly, People got it wrong. Channing Tatum is NOT the sexiest man alive. Nope. According to The Onion, Kim Jong-un is the Sexist Man Alive 2012. Move over, you buff strippers you, and make way for true hotness. Congrats to him! He totally deserves the title! There are few folks out there who could think of anyone more sexy than Mr. Kim Jong-un.

That's the brilliant thing about The Onion: their reporting is so dead-pan and intelligent-sounding that some people take it for, well, real news.

Now they can add yet another publication that has been sucker punched by their hilarious satirical articles. The People’s Daily newspaper, the official voice of the Chinese Communist Party, proceeded to post a 55-photo slideshow on its site in honor of the North Korean dictator, with quotes from The Onion accompanying it, as a kudos to his new "title". How! Embarrassing! Yet so entertaining for the rest of us!

Unfortunately, People's Daily caught on to the mistake rather quickly and pulled the slideshow. However, that did not stop The Onion from running this below their Sexiest Man announcement:

UPDATE: For more coverage on The Onion's Sexiest Man Alive 2012, Kim Jong-Un, please visit our friends at the People's Daily in China, a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc. Exemplary reportage, comrades.

People's Daily directly quoted The Onion on their commentary about the most famous North Korean out there, with compliments like, "With his devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm, and his strong, sturdy frame, this Pyongyang-bred heartthrob is every woman’s dream come true," and "He has that rare ability to somehow be completely adorable and completely macho at the same time," quoting Onion Style and Entertainment Editor Marissa Blake-Zweibel.

That was it for other accompanying text to the slideshow (can you believe they actually took that as fact?), but for whatever reason, it didn't include The Onion's pick of past winners:

  • 2011: Bashar al-Assad
  • 2010: Bernie Madoff
  • 2009: Charles and David Koch (co-winners)
  • 2008: Ted Kaczynski
  • 2007: T. Herman Zweibel

I mean, really, who says journalism is dead? Of course, many people in China have no idea The Onion is purely satirical news, and it isn't the first time Chinese publications have taken its articles as fact. Still, maybe The Onion was on to something here ... between Kim Jong-un's multiple human rights violations, including organizing public executions, sending people to political prison camps, requiring citizens to spy on each other, and giving the death penalty to anyone who travels outside of North Korea, yeah, "sexy" just about covers it, don't you think? Kudos to The Onion for yet another laugh -- but then again, I kind of don't want to think too much about the fact that someone over at People's Daily thought this was a actual story ...

Have you ever fallen for a story from The Onion?
