Hey, Hunger Games fans! Great news! It's officially LESS THAN A YEAR until The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theaters. Of course by "less" I mean "by exactly one day," because the release date is November 22, 2013, but … okay, yeah, we've got kind of a long wait. But! Until Lionsgate starts cranking out the inevitable onslaught of last-minute casting announcements and promotional stills, there's a fancy new Catching Fire poster to tide us over. Or possibly frustrate us all with its lack of new insight into the much-anticipated sequel.
The 'motion poster' for Catching Fire is much like the animated digital image they released for The Hunger Games (the studio probably figured that unless they could top the technology with Smell-o-Vision, it was probably best not to screw with a good thing), but this one's got a twist -- literally.
Check it out:
Here's the new poster in all its animated, flaming glory:
So yeah, it's pretty much a high-tech version of the Catching Fire book cover, which features Katniss's mockingjay pin. But it's interesting how it starts out looking identical to The Hunger Games poster, before the graphic of the pin twists, loses the arrow, and assumes a new heads-up position. Is it just Lionsgate's way of showing how the stories are connected, by evoking the Catching Fire book cover while paying homage to the first film (and the cover of the first book)? Or is there another message here, something about how the symbol of rebellion is growing stronger?
Well, who knows, but now I'm super interested about the possibilities for the final motion poster. Flaming pin turns sideways, drops the arrow, and morphs into a blue flying mockingjay? How will that work if they split the final book into two movies?
Anyway, since there's not much to say about the actual poster, here's a recap of some of the known info about Catching Fire:
• The cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Woody Harrelson, Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Lynn Cohen, Patrick St. Esprit, and Meta Golding
• The story will presumably follow the book: Katniss and Peeta briefly return home after winning the 74th Hunger Games before being forced on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts, and then must compete in the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell)
• Catching Fire was filmed in Clayton County, GA and is moving to Oahu next week before wrapping up in late December
• Few official photos have been released of Catching Fire, but the Examiner has an interesting slideshow of some on-set images
What do you think of the new poster? Are you excited about seeing Catching Fire? (You know, a YEAR from now?)
