What happens in Vegas ... is apparently way more permanent and official than you might expect! Or it least that's how it turned out to be for Janeane Garofalo, who recently discovered that the inebriated vows she took some 20 years ago in Sin City with an ex-boyfriend were the real deal. That's right, Garofalo has been married for the past 20 years -- and neither she nor her lawfully wedded groom has had the slightest clue. (And before you even ask, NO, they weren't just incredibly hungover for two decades.)
The whole thing was supposed to be "a joke," Garofalo says now of her nuptials to The Big Bang Theory producer Rob Cohen.
"We got married drunk in Vegas ... we dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew?"
Well, nobody knew. Until Cohen got engaged. And now that he's getting married "for real, his lawyer dug up something," Garofalo says. Wow. No blood tests? No birth certificates? Guess it IS a lot easier tying the knot in Vegas.
But that's not necessarily a good thing. Let this be a cautionary tale unto you, young tipsy gamblers in love! Think before you let that Elvis impersonator pronounce you and that guy from the blackjack table man and wife! Cause in 20 years, you might want to do the wedding thing sober with somebody whose name you actually know, and that quickie wedding could come back to haunt you.
If you ask me, the (now divorced) couple should team up again to turn the whole wacky story into a sitcom. With those two involved, it would have to be genius!
Are you shocked to hear that Janeane Garofalo's quickie Vegas wedding lasted 20 years?
