You may have heard that Ariel Winter, who plays Alex Dunphy on the hit TV show Modern Family, has been swept up in a mega-newsy scandal revolving around her real homelife. A judge removed Ariel from her home after being contacted by the young actress and told she was physically and emotionally abused by her mother, Crystal Workman. Well, it seems Workman has responded to her daughter's allegations.
Three days after Ariel contacted the Department of Child and Family Services alleging abuse, Workman filed a police report, which states that she found Ariel in bed with an 18-year-old in September. The incident report claims that the man -- Ariel's boyfriend of five months, according to her mom -- was engaging in "possible unlawful sex with minor." Then, in a statement yesterday, Workman said that this incident was the real reason her daughter filed for a restraining order and asked to be removed from her home and placed under the care of her sister. Whaaaaa?!
Sounds like a buncha cockamamie fiction to me. And according to TMZ, authorities don't really buy it either. They think Workman is just making it up to get custody back, which seems to dovetail with what "sources" say: That Workman only first mentioned the boyfriend during a guardianship hearing last month.
No matter what the truth here is, the fact that the 14-year-old Modern Family star is going through any of this is a real shame. Granted, we don't yet know what really happened, but this still kinda reminds me of Drew Barrymore's troubled situation with her mother Jaid, from whom she filed for emancipation when she was just 15. It's hard enough to grow up famous, and it's hard enough growing up with a dysfunctional family. But to have to deal with both at once? She has no choice now but to grapple with all of this in the spotlight. What a nightmare.
We can only hope that the young actress is given as much space and privacy she needs while this hairy legal battle plays out. But given the nature of the scandal, I'm sorry to say it seems that could be next to impossible.
