There are many, many reasons why Tina Fey is universally beloved. And last night, while speaking at a gala in support of the Center for Reproductive Rights, she gave us even more reason to adore her. Discussing the wild and crazy state of affairs in politics -- specifically women's issues -- Tina lamented, "I wish we could have an honest and respectful dialogue about these complicated issues, but it seems like we can't right now. And if I have to listen to one more gray-faced man with a $2 haircut explain to me what rape is, I'm going to lose my mind!" Sing it, sister!!!
Oh, and then, somehow, it got even better.
She said watching these guys -- like Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO.) and Senate hopeful Richard Mourdock (R-IN.) -- she wonders if maybe she's a "secretary on Mad Men." Ha! Fitting comparison, BUT it seems like not even Peggy, Joan, and Megan had to face remarks as asinine and holier-than-thou as the ones coming out of some politicians' mouths these days! For instance, consider Todd Akin's "gem" of a sound byte, which Tina explained to the crowd ...
Todd Akin claims that women can't really get pregnant from a legitimate rape because the body secretes hormones. Now I can't even finish this sentence without getting dumber; it's making me dumber when I say it — but it's something about the body not being able to get pregnant when it's under physical stress. Mr. Akin, I think you are confusing the phrase 'legitimate rape' with the phrase 'competitive gymnastics.'
Wow, right? Love love love hearing a brilliant, outspoken, strong, and powerful woman like Tina Fey dish it out to these dangerously out-to-lunch politicians! Hopefully, her fearless speech inspires others to join her in saying enough is enough ... and make their voices heard at the polls.
Here's a clip of her speech if you missed it ...
