Last year, I was watching the Academy Awards when Melanie Griffith and her husband, Antonio Banderas, walked the red carpet. The first thought that raced through my mind wasn't, "What is up with Melanie's lips?" or even, "Damn, Antonio still looks fiiine ..." Nope. It was, "Wait, didn't those two get divorced?" I quickly looked it up, and shockingly, Melanie and Antonio are still married. In fact, they've been married for 16 years. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I want them to get divorced. I just can't believe they haven't.
I think this proves that sometimes it's the couples you least expect who go the long haul. We all know that so-called "perfect" couple who divorced after a couple of years -- and then that battling couple who somehow stick together for better or worse. I always say the only difference between a couple that stays together and one that doesn't is that one stays together.
Here are 10 couples that are unbelievably, shockingly still married!
Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Maybe it was the way they met -- both were still married (ahem, to other people) and fell in love in that most unrealistic of places, on a movie set. Maybe it was that Melanie had already been married three times before (twice to Don Johnson). Maybe it's that Antonio has to be the smokingest hunk of Spanish hotdom ever. Maybe it's the addictions and rumored cheating. Whatever it is, I'm quite surprised these two are still married!
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. I can't be the only one who thought this marriage was doomed from the start. In fact, they seemed to do it strictly for the publicity. Heidi and Spencer's marital and family problems often seemed insurmountable on The Hills. And now Heidi is practically unrecognizable from plastic surgery. Yet they still keep going. Maybe it's their love of Jesus?
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze, Jr. Nothing about these two spells "quickie marriage" exactly, but for some reason when Sarah Michelle had her baby, I thought, "Wait. She and Freddie are still married?" Two Hollywood stars getting married in their mid-20s doesn't usually lead to a decade-long marriage, after all.
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale. When these two first hooked up, Gwen was actually not as big a star as Gavin's band, Bush. But now Gwen is a ginormous rock star/fashion mogul/supermom and Gavin is ... not sure. Gavin, what you up to these days? You normally wouldn't think that a wife eclipsing her husband's career would bode so well for a marriage, but it doesn't seem to have shaken this decade-long union in the slightest.
David and Victoria Beckham. A hot-as-lava sports superstar and a pop star? Sounds like a recipe for divorce. These two not only keep going after 13 years, but also four children. What's their secret? Um, looking the other way? Ha ha. I keed.
Bill and Hillary Clinton. Seriously?! Can you believe they are still married?? I think this one proves a couple of things: One, some marriages are based on more than love. Two, some love is stranger than fiction.
Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea Hurley. Dorothea is Jon Bon Jovi's high school sweetheart! They've been married since 1989. Unbelievable!
Bono and Alison Stewart. Same deal!
Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin. Do ... not ... understand. Maybe Huma cancelled his phone's text messaging capabilities and monitors his Facebook. Who knows.
David Bowie and Iman. You just don't normally give a rock star and a supermodel too much of a chance to stick together for very long -- especially once the model starts getting up there. But these two icons are 20 years strong.
Do you ever see a couple and think, "I can't believe they're still married?"
