fifty shades of grey movie bret easton ellisAmerican Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis is a man obsessed. Ever since Fifty Shades of Grey blew up this summer, the Twitter-aholic has been extremely vocal about his desire to pen the screenplay for the forthcoming flick. And when he was shot down, he still couldn't stop jabbering on about it via social media, making claims that porn star (and star of his latest flick The Canyons) James Deen was up for the role of Christian Grey and informing Matt Bomer fans that the White Collar star can't play Christian because he's gay. In short, he's been pretty much the most outspoken, obnoxious Hollywood-ite who has absolutely nothing to do with the film.

So of course Ellis had to share his snarky-to-the-nth degree opinion on Kelly Marcel being hired as the screenwriter ...

He tweeted last night:

Kelly Marcel?!? KELLY MARCEL?!? Kelly Marcel is WRITING the script for 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?!? THIS is the movie they want to make? ARGH

And as if that weren't enough, he went on to say ...

Kelly Marcel: the creator of (gulp) "Terra Nova" and a Mary Poppins bio-pic has been blessed by EL James and no one can stop her. Dear God.

Jealous much, BEE? The fact of the matter is that it's completely unfair of Ellis -- or anyone for that matter -- to judge Marcel exclusively on these two most recent, most visible credits.

For one thing, we don't know what her personal story is. It's not fair to judge any screenwriter only on their past work alone. Before becoming the auteur behind HBO's Girls, Lena Dunham was only known for doing a short film called Tiny Furniture. But obviously she's being celebrated and tapped now for different, more in-depth, mainstream work.

More from The Stir: '50 Shades of Grey' Screenwriter Has Officially Been Hired!

We don't know if perhaps Marcel has other credits that make her a great pick. Like maybe she was actually a sub! Or a dom! Or researched the BDSM world for another screenplay that was never made. Or maybe she's a total superfan of Fifty Shades. Maybe Tom Hardy is her Christian Grey!! Just kidding. But no, what I mean is, you can't judge a screenwriter on her scripts alone. She's also a writer with experience and a background that may lend itself to the gig. (And hey, she did star in Debbie Does Dallas the Musical!)

What's more, blowing Marcel off based on her writing of Saving Mr. Banks -- the Mary Poppins bio-pic -- makes absolutely no sense either. Sure, at first, you might think, "What the heck does a candy-coated family film like that have to do with Fifty Shades?" But the film's producers are raving that her work on that script "demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor, and depth of character." Plus, it was put on the 2011 Black List -- an annual list of Hollywood's most beloved unproduced screenplays. Sounds like she definitely has the writing chops to take on Christian and Ana. (Perhaps even more so than E.L. James did! Ha.) And unless he wants to burn all his bridges, Bret Easton Ellis may be wise to keep his jealous big mouth shut.

Do you agree with Bret Easton Ellis or do you think he needs to shut up?
