You know, I haven't always been the biggest Chris Brown fan in the past -- but that was before this morning, when I saw what I can only describe as one of the most heartfelt, moving messages that has ever been shared by a celebrity. Chris Brown not only poured out his heart and soul into the video he posted via Twitter last night, he revealed his true self. His truth, his heartbreak ... his soul of a poet.
As far as I'm concerned, this video changes everything. I never knew the depths of his emotion before. I never knew that everything I thought I knew about Chris Brown was wrong.
If you haven't already seen this groundbreaking confession -- this glorious testimony to the power of honesty -- you definitely won't want to miss it. Grab the tissues and experience its magic with me.
As you may have seen, yesterday Brown chose to publicly confirm his split with aspiring model Karrueche Tran. Sure, a lesser man might have kept his personal business private, but Brown is braver than that. He went straight to Us Weekly in order to provide the background on why his year-long romance had ended:
I have decided to be single to focus on my career. I love Karrueche very much but I don't want to see her hurt over my friendship with Rihanna. I'd rather be single allowing us to both be happy in our lives.
God, that's just so generous of him, don't you think? It's so obvious he's trying to protect her, honor their relationship, and do absolutely everything he can to spare her feelings. Why else would he have reportedly hooked up with Rihanna in a club bathroom? Because he's a gentleman that doesn't make out with one woman right in front of another, that's why.
Hours after he issued the public statement about his breakup with Karrueche, Brown shared a video titled "The Real Chris Brown." And it is amazing. If you've ever been torn apart by love ... if your heart has ever been in two places at once ... if you've ever been committed to one partner while secretly and repeatedly rubbing your genitalia against another ... you'll understand everything he's talking about. Check it out:
"Y'all don't really get the real Chris Brown, so I like to just be honest, man. I'm stressed out," he says. "That's just real shit, man." SO TRUE. I mean, right away you know this message is going to be something special. Something real. Something put together on iMovie after too many mind-altering substances.
He goes on to muse, "When you share history with somebody, then you tend to fall in love with somebody else, it's kinda difficult. Is there such thing as loving two people? I don't know if that's possible, but for me, I feel like that." What really makes these words shine is the way he intersected the footage of him hanging in clubs, guzzling champagne. It's all just so incredibly romantic and powerful -- and the haunting images of him sitting in a hallway smoking just drive the message home further: Chris Brown is a man tortured by love. Tortured by the desire to put his penis in more than one woman at a time. Tortured.
"I'm being real," he says. Of course he is!
"I don't want to hurt either or. I'm not trying to be a player. I'm not trying to be a dog. None of that." Obviously! I mean, if there's any confusion, like if you start wondering whether cheating on one woman with another is something that actually causes pain or makes a guy kind of a dog, refer back to point #1: realness.
Finally: "My mama raised me differently. I just can't. It's too much sometimes." If I hadn't truly changed my mind about Chris Brown before now, this was the moment that did it. He just ... he just cares too much, you guys. You can tell, because he included footage of his mom. He was raised to be a man with strong, undeniable feelings. Sometimes those feelings tell him to hook up with one woman while he's dating another. Sometimes those feelings tell him to repeatedly punch a woman in the face until she's bruised and bloody. It's just TOO MUCH to deny those feelings.
I finally, finally understand the real Chris Brown. Some might say that he's an immature piece of crap who refuses to take responsibility for a single one of his reprehensible actions, but I see him for who he is now: a man who's keeping it real. A man for whom it's all just too much sometimes.
