Today Tricia Voorhies, mother of Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle on Saved by the Bell, offered an explanation for her daughter's bizarre behavior as of late -- she has bipolar disorder. If it's true, that would certainly explain things.
While Lark herself denies anything is wrong, a video that went viral earlier this year in which she displayed some bizarre behavior caused many to speculate something was wrong, as did her altered appearance. On top of that, in a series of interviews with People, she was said to "frequently stop mid-sentence and stare off, often mumbling to herself or to others who weren't there."
Some have suggested it might be drugs or other issues, but her mother today told the magazine it is instead mental illness.
She said, "There are things that have traumatized her. I care deeply about my daughter and I want her to resume her life."
When People asked Lark about her odd behavior she discounted her "over-loving" mother's explanation and said, "I have a strong spiritual sense. You caught me in moments of pray [sic]."
Perhaps that's true, but it seems unlikely. Her former Saved by the Bell co-star, Dustin Diamond, who played Screech, told Radar Online about an additional scenario during a recent run-in he had with Lark that makes her mother's assertions seem more likely:
When we first saw each other, she gave me a big hug. She seemed normal: alive and great. And as the night went on, it just went wrong. The person who said 'Hi' to me when she first showed up on-set was not the same person at the end of the night. It was like talking to two different people.
Also, it doesn't appear that her mother (with whom she lives) would have any motive for spreading false information about her daughter. Often when the parents of celebrities take to the press and divulge details about their children's lives, it's for self-serving purposes (Ahem, Lohans). But when it comes to statements made by Lark's mother, it seems like she only wants to help her daughter. I can only imagine how hard it would be to sit back and watch the world speculate about what was wrong with your daughter and offer all sorts of reasons when you know the truth.
I'm sure people will debate if it was her place or not to reveal her daughter's condition, but it feels like it was done out of nothing but love. Hopefully it will help fans be a little less quick to judge Lark and lead to her getting the help she may need.
Are you surprised to hear that Lark Voorhies may be suffering from bipolar disorder? Do you think her mother should have revealed this information publicly?
