When I first heard that country singer Kellie Pickler had shaved her head, I cringed a bit waiting for news of some kind of Britney Spears episode. The real reason she did it, however, is so much better -- she did it as a show of solidarity for her best friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
According to People, her friend Summer Holt Miller, 35, is a mother of two who was diagnosed in June, and underwent a double mastectomy. She was recently declared cancer-free, but will begin chemotherapy treatments on Thursday to prevent the cancer from coming back. In a press release, Pickler talked about what she's hoping to accomplish by buzzing off her long blonde locks too:
Cancer does not discriminate. If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.
There goes that ditzy blonde image that's followed her since her first days on American Idol when she couldn't pronounce salmon and didn't know what calamari was. Seriously, what an amazing thing to do for a friend. We've seen siblings and parents do it, but for a major personality like Pickler whose job is based largely on her physical image to do it for a friend is pretty damn brave.
Fortunately for Pickler, she looks amazing like this too -- even more beautiful I might argue than with the bleached blonde locks. And bonus -- it will really play well into her Halloween costume this year. Today she tweeted, "Thinking about being "G.I. Jane" for Halloween. ;)" Perfect.
In any case, hopefully her efforts won't be for naught, and the buzz she's creating really will inspire women to be aggressive about their breast health. Will you?
Are you surprised that Kellie Pickler would shave her head? Would you do the same to support a friend?
