Well the Internets are a flutter over the most unlikely endorsement of the election season so far: Nicki Minaj for Mitt Romney. Whaaaat? Mittens appealing to hip hop artists? Hey Clint Eastwood, you was sleeping on stage, you were dosin' -- now MOVE. Nicki's goin' in.
In a new Lil' Wayne release Nicki raps, "I'm a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/You lazy bitches is f$&%ing up the economy." Okay, first of all, how much do I love hearing the word "economy" in a hip hop song. But secondly, I don't believe for a minute that this is a real live Romney endorsement. This is Minaj we're talking about here. She's playing with us, obvs!
I think Nicki is just impersonating a Republican. She takes on other personas in her songs all the time. "I'm Roman, I'm a barbarian, I'm Conan" anyone? And that "you lazy bitches" line sounds more like she's mocking what Republicans say -- I mean, I just spent a week with my more conservative relatives. I got an earful of that kind of talk.
I've been watching Nicki's Twitter feed hoping she will comment on the lyrics -- but nope. Here's what she said back in June according to CNN, though: "Just give FREE health care to all. @BarackObama what can we do?" and "@BarackObama I wouldn't mind the millions they took if it was going to healthcare. Why should a poor person struggle to pay for MEDS, sir?"
Yeah, doesn't sound like she's a fan of supply-side economics to me. Then again, it doesn't sound like she's a major fan of Obama, either. She's kind of getting on his case. Forget all the flap about Nicki voting for Romney -- will she vote for anyone at all? That's none of my BEEZness! But it's cool to think politics are on her mind and that she's maybe getting her fans to pay closer attention ... just in time for the DNC convention! Hmmm ....
What do you think Nicki Minaj's Romney lyrics are about?
