Ischmidt new girlf you watch FOX's hit sitcom New Girl -- and if you don't, then you need to get on the bandwagon STAT -- you know Max Greenfield, who plays goofy wannabe playa Schmidt, is a riot to watch. But the actor might be looking to start moving in a more dramatic direction ... Celebuzz spoke with Greenfield recently about potentially stepping into the uber-coveted role of Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie.

The Emmy Award-nominated comedian said, "I want to audition for the movie. I think I'd be great in it!" Hmm, well, Schmidt is a total sex maniac who is more than comfortable taking his shirt off (see above) ...

Greenfield elaborated:

Look, when I read the book, I thought, "What a comedy!" I think maybe I can bring a little bit of validity to the situation. Sometimes, you try to figure out life and what it all means, and maybe I only got this New Girl job so that I would be enough of a commodity to get the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey. I’d probably retire after I did that because I think my performance would be just spot-on. ... I don’t even think it’s a shirtless thing. I think it’s more of a raw intensity thing. Obviously, I’m the man for the job.

Haaa, too funny! It's like he's the satirical version of Ian Somerhalder who has been gushing all summer about being perfect for the role of Christian Grey.

And because it is oh-so-amusing, Celebuzz continued the conversation, going so far as to ask Greenfield who would be his #1 pick to play Ana. His response: Drumroll, please ... Girls star Lena Dunham! Turns out, he has actually given this quite a bit of thought ...

She's fantastic. What if Judd [Apatow] and I collaborated and turned Fifty Shades of Grey into a movie together? That’s what I’d like to do. Me, Lena [Dunham] and Judd. It’s a done deal. I’m calling whoever owns the rights and making this happen.

LOVE it. Okay, okay, we realize a deadpanned, tongue-in-cheek version of the book isn't what Universal Pictures has in mind for the film, but ... that doesn't mean Greenfield can't collaborate with Judd and Lena on a smaller screen treatment. Anyone else smell a new Funny or Die sketch?!

In the meantime, Greenfield hinted that it's not out of the question for New Girl to inject a future script with some Fifty Shades flavor ...

I have read anything in any of those scripts about Fifty Shades of Grey, but I’m sure that it’s going to come up. If we were going to do it, we’d have to dedicate an entire episode to it and go all out. Slowly but surely, everyone in the apartment will be reading it. It will be like a sexual awakening!

OMG, I can totally see it now! Even more reason to look forward to the second season of the downright hilarious show.

Would you love to see New Girl tackle Fifty Shades, or Max Greenfield and Lena Dunham as Christian and Ann in a Judd Apatow-produced Fifty Shades spoof?
