Stuck in Reality

'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Can't Keep Gary Shirley From Moving On

by Jeanne Sager on August 23, 2012 at 8:21 AM

Gary Shirley Amber PortwoodTeen Mom is now in the home stretch, headed in for the season -- and show -- finale. And with every episode, I just feel sorrier and sorrier for Amber Portwood's ex-boyfriend Gary Shirley. Here the guy is essentially a single dad, and when she does bother to make time to see her daughter, she screams and curses at him.

So it should be good news for Gary that Amber is now a guest of the Indiana Department of Corrections, right? He's got custody of Leah (a move we're expected to see in the Teen Mom finale), and he can do whatever he darn well pleases -- both as a dad and a single dude. Well, in theory he can ... in reality ...

Gary still seems to be letting Amber boss him around, even from prison.

Joking around on Twitter recently, Gary shared a photo of himself hanging out with a girl he referred to as his girlfriend. But Gary was quick to follow it up with a second Tweet saying it was all a joke, the mystery female is just a good friend.

And now we know why. When fellow Teen Mom star Jenelle Evans challenged him on how Amber would feel about his new girlfriend, Shirley said there's no new girlfriend ... but things would get "messy."

Messy? Really? She's in prison! They've spent more time on the show broken up than they have together! And in last week's episode, she was still referring to him as "fat" and a "bastard."

Gary needs to maintain a relationship with Amber because she is the mother of his child, and he has custody. Leah is said to talk to her mom at least once a week, and that's probably a good thing for the child. But that's where this ends.

As much as Amber's prison time could be good for her to straighten out that messed up head of hers, it should be good for Gary too. He should finally be letting go of Amber and living ... key words here are "should be."

Does Amber deserve to still control what Gary is up to from prison?

The girl has problems as a woman you should be sympathetic to her life. She was a 16 year old girl.He was 22 you act as if he is father of the year material! His mother seems to do all the leg work. Yes he takes care of her but he does play games with her and he uses his little girl as a bargaining chip. Amber seems to have serious mental issues maybe prison will truly help her she will have no distractions I don't really care for her or Farrah for that matter they both seem very selfish but Amber seems to be screaming out for help and I hope she can get it she has my sympathy but Gary is on government aid he has the ability to get a job. Then uses said government aid to by junkfood instead of giving his child a healthier diet. He is very passive aggressive with her instead of trying to work with her he likes to push her buttons he seems to enjoy it. I just find it hard to drum up any much sympathy for him. It is great that he is being a Dad but welcome to the world of parenting millions of parents do it everyday!

I'm not even remotely sympathetic to Amber. She's a pouty, whiny brat on the best of days. That's just her personality, she's a tyrant and would be even if she hadn't become a teen mom.

As terrible as it sounds, neither of them have any business being parents. I get that it's hard and she has issues probably beyond the scope of anything any Teen Mom fans realize. But Catelynn and Tyler made the right decision for Carly, and I feel like it was just as warranted in this situation if not more so. He needs to get over Amber and move on. She's only making him miserable. Leah doesn't need that. It's better for them to be apart and happy than together and miserable 'for Leah's sake'.

From what I have seen of Amber this last season we obviously do not have the full story. She is clearly high more often than not and it appears by the order in which the show was edited that rehab kept her doped up and exasperated this issue. Both Gary and Amber are to blame as well as many others I'm sure. However when you see a mother who clearly loves her child but chooses jail is the biggest cry for help ever! Calling her names is not helping this young lady and very detrimental to her relationship with her daughter. Maybe a little empathy if not for Amber then for lil Leah.

i think everyone should just give her a BREAK already , come on people , she knows better than anyone that she made mistakes , she is trying to better herself , myself i think she is showing how adult she is by doing her time , shes gonna get her G.E.D. , she can do other things while she is serving her time , i just think all this Amber bashing needs to STOP , i think you guys are being cruel to her , saying nasty mean hurtful things about her , it could be you in her shoes , so if i were you i would watch your step , you never know when you will make a mistake , i myself am all for her getting her life straight and keeping it that way , Amber is and will be a great mom , did anyone NOT see how much it hurt her when her daughter told her dont leave i need you , im just sayin dont bash until you have walked in her shoes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its not all Amber to blame. Obviously this man has no compass in life without an overbearing woman there to lead the way. Grow up. Get a pair. And move on. DONE!

They're both crap and Leah doesn't stand a chance. This is the baby that should have been put up for adoption!

I feel sorry for both of them. I used to hate on Amber, but than I remember that she was a kid when Gary, who was 22, knocked her up. He should have gone to jail. She obviously has serious mental issues that she needs to work out. I don't think prison will be good for her. She might think it is for now because she chose to go, but maybe in the long run, it just make her be more resentful and try to take it out on Gary AND Leah. I don't know...the way she treated Gary was awful, but what did he expect? She was still a child than and still acts like one now!?

If she was 16 when she got pregnant and Gary was 22, isn't that rape?  Why wasn't he charged?
