The man who played Arnold Dingfelder Horshack on Welcome Back, Kotter, Ron Palillo, passed away from a heart attack in Palm Beach, Florida. He was 63 years old. He leaves behind his longtime partner, Joseph Gramm.
I can't believe we lost another Sweathog! Just a few months ago Robert Hegyes, who played Juan Epstein on the show, died at the age of 60 (also from a heart attack). But Palillo did much more in his life that that squawk out that crazy Horshack laugh on the show. In addition to guest roles on TV shows, Palillo performed on Broadway, wrote a play, taught acting at a Florida high school, and even wrote and illustrated two children's books, The Red Wings of Christmas and A Gift for the Contessa. But as accomplished as he was throughout his life, we'd like to salute him with some of his funniest moments as Horshack.
Here's Horshack raising his hand. "Ooh, ooh ooh, OOH!" Has anyone else in television history ever raised their hand in the classroom so enthusiastically?
Horshack learns how babies are made. And doesn't believe it! Well, Barbarino doesn't get it exactly right ...
Sometimes Horshack just got so mad!
Here's a super-brief history of Ron Palillo's career, before and beyond his Sweathog years. Also, I didn't add these in, but you would not believe how many videos there are on YouTube of babies doing Horshack laughs.
Do you remember Horshack on Welcome Back, Kotter?
