After 14 years together, the split between Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis couldn't have been easy. Well, in her first interview since that June announcement, we see how truly agonizing the entire breakup has been.
The pair, who have two kids together, had drifted apart after what seemed to be a storybook romance. While promoting her new film, Cornouaille, the singer-actress gave French Elle a rare glimpse into her wounded heart.
Asked about her ex, she shot back:
I don't want to talk about him. Who said that artists should sell their soul, expose everything about themselves? ... It's my duty to promote this movie, and my albums, but can you imagine what it feels like to see people making a business out of your pain. What's happened to us is our concern.
Paradis is clearly in agony and understandably so. The world watched what was once a passionate love affair literally evaporate.
I don't have the recipe for happiness, but I think the engine is simply having the desire .... It's not feeling obliged or forced or repeating yourself ... I hate, for example, whenever you hear someone say: "You have work at being a couple." No, you have to want to be there. And for me, I want to be right where I am right now.
So this is what it feels like to lose the most desirable guy in the world. Ouch. I totally feel for her. A lot of women can relate to that kind of anguish. She has spent a huge portion of her adult life loving Depp, who reportedly has already moved on. According to Us Weekly, he is dating 26-year-old model Amber Heard.
Hurt as she may be, it sounds like Paradis is ready to move on too. "Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," she told Harper's Bazaar before the breakup was announced. "Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."
Were you surprised by the split? Do you think Depp moved on too quickly?

They've been a private couple from the start. Why not allow them the curtesy of being private in their split? It really ISN'T our business to know. Our lives aren't going to stop because we don't know how Vanessa and Johnny are handling their break up. What is our business, is like she said, her albums and movie. Tabloids and reporters should back off and market the trade, unless being an actress/actor/ singer/musician is no longer entertaining enough that we HAVE to know every detail of other people's life, true or not, instead of living our own life.
