Oh, Randy Travis. I don't know if he's building up creative fodder for some tortured country song lyrics or what, but this is one dude who's not having a very bad year. As you may remember, he was busted in February for public intoxication (he was reportedly discovered in a parked car outside of a Baptist church, getting royally wasted on wine, of all things), and now he's been charged with a related -- but much more serious -- crime.
According to police reports, Travis was arrested around midnight on Tuesday after crashing his car in Texas. He was booked for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, but also on a felony retaliation and obstruction charge, thanks to what happened next.
Around 11:18 p.m. on Tuesday night, a passerby called the cops to report a man lying in the road. When police arrived, they found Travis's busted-up 1998 Trans Am off on the side of the road, having collided with some barricades in a construction zone.
As for Travis, he was lying in the street, bruised and battered from the accident. Aaaaaaaand ... he was completely naked. (Cops gave him a shirt for his mug shot.)
According to a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, Travis became aggressive when police put him in the squad car, and threatened to shoot and kill the troopers. That's what earned him those retaliation and obstruction charges -- and making matters even potentially worse for his case, he refused to take a breathalyzer, so a blood draw was taken to determine his blood alcohol level.
He's been released on bond now, but I can't imagine that these are happy days for Mr. Randy Travis. Assuming the blood tests show he was in fact drunk, he's going to be in a world of trouble, and I'm guessing that the incident from earlier this year will make it hard to convince a judge this was a one-time mistake.
I've definitely made my own share of bad alcohol-related decisions, but it's hard to wrap my head around being so drunk that you're found naked at the scene of an accident. While I'm sure there will be plenty of jokes around his arrest in the days to come, to me it just seems like Travis is a man in need of help. He's clearly got a major problem, and until he gets a handle on his drinking, his troubles are just going to get worse.
Having a legal mess to contend with is one thing, but he could have killed someone last night. I hope this is the wakeup call Travis needed to get his life back on track.
Are you surprised to hear about this latest trouble from Randy Travis?
