If ever there was an intense episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, this was it. We're not talking any butt x-rays or even relationship drama, but tonight they brought us an up-close-and-personal view of a stranger's water birth. It felt much more TLC than E!.
Kourtney and her baby daddy Scott Disick were seriously considering an at-home water birth. Kourtney thought it would be a beautiful experience, and Scott figured that if women had babies in caves hundreds of years ago, Kourtney should be able to do it in their house. He was a little concerned about "leaking oils and placenta juices," but he was on board if Kourtney wanted to do it.
Kourtney thought she wanted to, even though Khloe and Kim told her she was crazy. First, however, she wanted to witness one for herself. So she found a woman who allowed her and Khloe (for moral support) to watch while the whole thing was filmed.
I can't imagine why anyone would agree to such a thing, but she did, and so there they all were. At first it was fantastic, with the woman happy, bouncing on her ball, watching television, and eating potato chips. Then the moaning started, and things got intense.
Khloe was beside herself and had no idea what to do, so she just started cleaning the woman's house. "This is not normal," she said.
Kourtney sat front and center and watched, but even she had a hard time handling it as the pain got more and more intense.
It was undeniably an incredible moment when the baby came and was placed in its mother's arms, but it was hard to fully relish given the pain we'd just witnessed. As Khloe said, "Those torturous screams will stay with me the rest of my life." Me too.
The whole experience confirmed for Kourtney that an at-home water birth was not for her. "I just don't think that a water birth is what I want to do now," she said. "Even though I think that the experience at home would be amazing, when it's your child's life that's involved, I just don't think I would take that risk."
And as we know, she delivered Penelope in a hospital. She reportedly did it without any drugs, so perhaps her pain was just as intense as what we witnessed tonight. At least she was in an environment in which she was comfortable though, which is the most important thing for each woman. While Khloe tweeted during the episode that reliving that experience while watching was tough, she does believe everyone should choose what's right for them:
Any way you choose to have your baby is YOUR choice. Either way its an amazing journey to be apart of!
One thing is pretty certain, however -- when she's pregnant, Khloe won't even entertain the thought of a water birth. It's going to be dry land all the way for her.
Were you surprised by Khloe and Kourtney's reaction to the water birth? Have you had one? Would you?
