'Teen Mom' Recap: Catelynn's Situation Is Worse Than It Seemed

by Sasha Brown-Worsham on July 31, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Teen Mom CatelynnAh, Teen Mom. Always a delight week after week to see just how depressing things can get. And sure enough, this one was a doozy.

What was the worst part? It's hard to say. Maci seems to be holding it together. She is looking for a home with her boyfriend. But she was the only happy story. Sad stories abound on this show.

First there was Amber who can't seem to stop compulsively calling her on-again, off-again boyfriend Gary a "fat ass." There is Farrah, constantly looking for love and who talks to her 2-year-old like she is a peer. The worst, though, was Catelynn. Oh, Catelynn. Her family broke our hearts.

Tyler's father Butch has so many problems, it's hard to limit it to just drugs. He apparently abuses April (Catelynn's mom), according to the courts and April herself. On this episode April was covered in bruises and Butch was back in jail after telling Tyler (via text) that he loved cocaine more than him.

Stellar parenting, I tell you.

It's a wonder that Catelynn and Tyler turned out as great as they did with an admitted alcoholic for a mom and an angry drug addict for a dad. Catelynn and Tyler have formed one of the sweetest bonds ever seen on TV. I would be proud to have my kids be half the kids they are, and I like to think I am a pretty decent parent. Sure, I make my share of mistakes, but in general my kids are my priority. We have memberships to all the museums in our area and spend our weekends and days exploring.

I know so many parents of means who read books on parenting, send their kids to amazing schools, and devote their lives to their kids, and they still don't raise responsible, happy children. Somehow Butch and April managed to raise two amazing kids? How does that happen?

Maybe it's because they have each other. Or maybe it's nature over nurture. Somewhere along the way, these two kids got a whole lot of love. Actually, Tyler's mom seems like she is pretty great, so maybe it's all due to her.

Whatever the reason, Catelynn and Tyler are a shining example of the fact that great people can come from awful circumstances. Somehow it makes the show a lot less depressing.

Why do you think Catelynn and Tyler are so great?

They learned from their parents mistakes. As did I. That's a huge reason why I don't have kids yet,i I wasn't ready and felt too selfish. My kids will have the mom I didn't.

I'm not sure but they seemed to be really balanced. Maybe because they don't use drugs and drugs can really mess people up (dont know if Catelynns mom is an addict, but i wouldnt count it out). Tyler's mom HAS to have something to do with it, she seems stable and loving. I like these two.

They're so great because they probably had to take care of themselves a lot!  They don't want to be like their parents.

They had to grow up fast. These are two examples who were tough enough to brave it out. Other kids in the same situtation are out on the streets following their parents footsteps.

What you don't see is the emotional baggage that they're carrying that will surface it's ugly head one day or another.

Maybe it's because they realize they're all each other has.

Well youre either a product of your environment OR your are nothing like it!!!! Good for them, I cant imagine having both messed up parents. 1 is bad enough, but 2? It just makes the situation worse.

It's because they made the CHOICE to not be losers like their parents. I made the same choice a long time ago and have been doing my best to live up to that choice. I choose not to be a fuck up. And seriously, it's not hard to do.

they are amazing, they made a very mature decision for their daughter. Obviously they were forced to grow up quickly. Alot of kids grow up saying ' I dont want to do what my parents did". That helps alot with their devlopment because they learn from others mistakes.
