Forget Hermione Emma Watson as the top choice to play Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie! The latest gossip pegs Katie Cassidy -- who you may know either as a.) the daughter of David Cassidy, b.) Juliet on Gossip Girl, c.) Ella on the short-lived Melrose Place reboot, or d.) all of the above -- as a likely choice to play Ana. Whaaaat?!

If there's even an ounce of truth to this, I'll be seriously disappointed with anyone and everyone responsible for casting this film. It doesn't make any sense at all! Don't get me wrong. Katie could definitely be a contender for the film ... Just not cast as "Ms. Steele."

Katie would make an awesome Katherine Kavanaugh! That is, if they don't go with another fan fave for the role, Blake Lively ...

Maybe I'm hung up on the Heather Locklear-like character she played in The CW's second-generation version of Melrose Place, but in general, Katie's got a rep for playing assertive, bold, sexually self-assured, and all-around "not that innocent" characters. To put it in Sex and the City terms, she's much more Samantha than Charlotte. And we all know Ana's basically supposed to be a virginal prude -- at least in the first book. Hence whoever plays her needs to be able to play naive, and Katie's not the woman for that job.

For the record, I can't see another actress rumored to be up for the part, Emma Stone, in the role, either. She, like Katie Cassidy, comes off as too mature and confident. But I'd bet either could pull off Ana's fab BFF.

Although we're obviously most psyched to see who will be cast in the leading roles, there's clearly lots of awesome competition for this significant supporting part. Can't wait to see who comes out on top!
