It seemed obvious last season that 16 and Pregnant star Jennifer Del Rio and her baby daddy Josh Smith were headed nowhere good. But now, according to TMZ, it has become even worse. Del Rio says he is a huge threat to her family's safety and she moved 1,000 miles away from him and is asking for sole custody of their twins.
This isn't the first time this couple has had issues. Even on the show, their fights were extremely ugly and bitter. Their relationship seemed a little more volatile and a lot more dangerous than anyone else who had been on the show. But the allegations against Smith are horrific. One is that he threatened to have Del Rio raped.
No wonder she wants to keep him from their babies. This also says something very frightening about the show itself.
The thing we always have to remember about these shows is that they're real. These aren't actors playing a little role. These aren't shiny, happy kids pretending like they have issues. These are real teenagers who got pregnant at a very young age. The fact is, most of the time, teens who find themselves pregnant aren't coming from the best backgrounds.
Maybe there was domestic abuse or abandonment or poverty. Maybe there were bad grades or drugs or other problems. Usually teen pregnancy that is carried to term is more of a symptom than the problem itself.
In other words: These are at-risk kids and they are on TV. The only difference between them and any other teen with serious, serious issues is that they are on TV. That means we care about their trials and tribulations, their fights and breaksups, the messes they make of their lives.
But this isn't entertainment. This is real life and real pain and real danger. I hope Del Rio and her little boys can be safe and happy and far away from anyone who might threaten them or harm them.
This is when the show is just pathetically sad and wrong. This isn't a situation we all need to see. It's just not.
Do you think this show is good or bad for these moms?

I see both sides of the argument. I watched 2 episodes of that show and thanked the heavens I did not get pregnant as a teenager (my family and friends were all about abstinence so it wasn't much of a problem) It is an eye opener that getting pregnant doesn't mean you are going to get a new baby doll to play with. That said, I've overheard teens talking about how they wanted to get pregnant to be on the show... THAT was disturbing! I personally don't like the show. I want to slap the entitlement off the two preppy girls I saw and make them wake up to the jerks they are being to their parents.
This isn't a college assignment, who cares about grammar guys.. come on.. we're not here to impress. I think the show is worse for them.. Mainly the lack of privacy and I am sure being on camera 24/7 does alter their attitude. And, MTV likes to show more of the bad then good.
In my opinion, yes, this actually IS something people need to see. Watching this stuff unfold and knowing that it's real helps to make it real for other kids. For example, a girl might be in an abusive relationship such as this was, and see Jennifer's episode, and realize what she needs to do to help herself. It could help that one viewer avoid a situation similar to this. This show isn't trash like Jersey Shore and Real World. This show is REAL and actually helps people. I watch it religiously, and it's helped keep me out of trouble. I see what these girls go through with their relationships and it keeps me from getting into a toxic relationship myself. It keeps me safe as far as sex goes, knowing that teen pregnancy can and will happen to ANYONE and puts an extreme toll on someone's life.
These young ladies need to think about what their doing before they sleep with a scumbag. It's sad that the babies are the ones that suffer for the parent's stupid decisions. There is only one girl on Teen Mom/Sixteen and Preg that did the right thing and that's Catelyn. She gave her little girl a chance at a better life.
I'm fully supportive of 16 and pregnant. It really shows the realities of how hard it is to be a teen parent.
Teen mom on the otherhand I'm not a fan of. After those girls get their checks from MTV they're not typical teen moms anymore.
