'Real Housewives of New York' Recap: Aviva's a Troublemaker

by Julie Ryan Evans on July 23, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Aviva DrescherI've been trying to figure out how Aviva Drescher is going to hold her own on this season of The Real Housewives of New York. She's happily married with children, and she seems relatively laid back, not one to dive into the drama -- not exactly the makings of an interesting Housewife. Tonight her role became a little more clear -- she's an instigator.

She doesn't want to be in the firing line, but oh does she like to see those shots go off. Tonight the flames she was fanning were those between Ramona Singer and LuAnn de Lesseps.

Though they've feuded long and hard over the years, Ramona and The Countess finally seemed to have reached some sort of truce, but Aviva was out to put an end to that. True, LuAnn's move at the wine party was low (where is her etiquette book?) -- trying to trick Ramona with her own wine. I'm sure they were hoping she'd criticize it, saying it sucked or something.

And she did, a little, but not too badly. When the big reveal was made, Ramona, surprisingly, was a good sport. She made a joke, poured herself a big ol' vat of pinot, and was ready to let the whole thing go. Aviva was not.

She carried her outrage over the event during their trip to Miami. The one where Aviva totally left out LuAnn and Heather Thomson even though she thought it was so rude of Heather for leaving Ramona out when it came to London. Not sure how she can justify that, but anyway, there they were in Miami at dinner, with some vulgar hot dog in front of Aviva, and Aviva just had to start stirring the pot.

"I think it was really below the belt," Aviva told her, then started rehashing and bashing the whole thing. Suddenly, Ramona started thinking that maybe she really should be mad too. "I don’t know why she goes out of her way to do such mean things to me," she said of LuAnn, with storm clouds brewing in her eyes.

So you know there's going to be a confrontation about that coming up soon, one that could have been avoided if Aviva had just left things alone. It's one thing to have a friend's back; it's another to try and rile someone up -- especially someone so easily riled as Ramona.

Previews show plenty more confrontations this season, and it will be interesting to see how the sides settle. While Aviva and Ramona are chummy now, it doesn't look like that's going to last. Mostly, I hope to see Carole Radziwill take LuAnn to task for being the phony, "friend jumping" one-upper she is. That whole dress borrowing request from Carole's friend was so classless it was almost comical.

And talk about trying to stir things up ... I can't wait for Sonja Morgan to meet Aviva's dad. He's a character (and a sex addict), and I'm not sure if even Sonja can handle him or why Aviva would want her to. But I can't wait to find out. And for the first time, I'm feeling like maybe this season of RHWONY might not be a total waste after all. Let's see if they can keep it up ... as well as Aviva's dad apparently can.

Do you think Aviva was just trying to stir up trouble between Ramona and LuAann? Do you think LuAnn trying to trick Ramona was mean or all in good fun?

Carole's an instigator too. Can't stand her and wtf is she doing on Real Housewives, when she's neither a wife, nor a mother???  She and Aviva are annoying as hell.

Aviva is a big crybaby. She gets her feelings hurt if it rains. No, I don't think LuAnn was trying to make the crazy alcoholic look bad.

Please, this new cast leaves a lot to be desired - get rid of Luann and ALL the new housewives - keep Ramona and Sonja and I am certain you can find some entertaining "new blood" for the show.  As it is now, I can see the ratings falling at an alarming speed.  Luann looks like a he/she and dresses horribly and constantly tried to one-up everyone.  Sickening.

Aviva also doesn't know sonja too well either, as i read recently that she's foregoing sex these days. "awkward"!!!  and she may think her dad is a hoot, but all i can say is major "ick" factor with this guy.  he sits and slams his son in laws mother's town, how RUDE.  no social skills at all these people.  I think Carole seems to be the most normal of the group this time.

I'm still doing a WTF Head Shake about the dinner with Aviva, Ramona and spouses.. Ramona attacking Reid's Cerviche like a starving buzzard (after going on ad nauseum about her own salad, that poor waiter) and then saying "Oh, I have such a perfect pallete, I can taste every spice in this, um that's COLANDER"???? I think it's called Corriander, Colander is what you use to drain pasta!

(I'm nit picking again, but Ramona just fries me with her all knowing f'd up attitude)

The best part was Aviva's dad setting her up with that huge hot dog, too damn funny!

I think whatever Luaann was trying to do was tactless. I had a feeling from the beginning of the "wine game" that they were setting her up. I'm not convinced yet that Aviva is stirring the pot. But the previews for what's coming up look good.

Aviva has definitely been stirring the pot for Ramona the past few weeks and frankly, it's getting pretty old. Her ability to fly to miami, but not the UK is odd. The producers totally made those scenes longer and juicier this week to get us to keep watching. The ratings for this season have been pretty low and I actually said to myself "I'm so bored of this!" as the show was ending. Then they show the fired up scenes about St. Barts and hmmm yes all of a sudden, I decide that I will tune in again.

Aviva's just noticing how the ladies operate, and like me, she is quiet and doesn't like to rock the boat. I'm glad Sonja told her that with Ramona, just to say how she feels and get it out. I don't think doing that would make her an instigator.

If you listened very carefully Aviva said that she was commenting about the wine game at dinner because Mario had been complaining about it to her husband for two days.  I think the producers put it in for posterity but they made sure it was barely noticeable so that she did look like a pot stirrer.  I can definitely tell she's comfortable when her husband is around and when he's not she doesn't want to move out of her comfort zone ie, planes, heights, etc.
