With production starting this fall and a release date of November 22, 2013, it's about time for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to start ramping up on their casting decisions -- and right on schedule, we've got confirmation on another character from the film. Philip Seymour Hoffman was recently confirmed as Head Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee, and now Lionsgate has announced that Amanda Plummer will play District 3 tribute Wiress.
(You remember Amanda Plummer, don't you? As in Pulp Fiction's Honey Bunny? As in, "Any of you f**king pricks move, and I'll execute every motherf**king last one of ya"?)
Plummer has been officially confirmed for the role, and it looks like we're getting very close to hearing who will be playing tribute Johanna Mason, too. At this rate, I'm guessing the big Finnick announcement will be coming any day now.
Here's what we know so far:
The main stars will return. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, and Woody Harrelson will all return in their roles from The Hunger Games. Whew.
Philip Seymour Hoffman will be playing Head Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee. I don't know about you, but I think Hoffman is the PERFECT casting choice for the Gamemaker who takes the place of Seneca Crane. Especially given his, ah, politically crafty nature.
Amanda Plummer will be playing Wiress. Wiress is an older District 3 tribute who won a previous Hunger Game (about 20 years before the events of Catching Fire take place). She's assumed to be mentally unstable, but proves a valuable ally to Katniss because (mumble mumble spoilers mumble). I don't know a lot about Plummer, aside from her famous Honey Bunny role, but she seems like a good fit -- plus, she's got amazing acting chops in her DNA, being the daughter of Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer and all.
Jena Malone is PROBABLY playing Johanna Mason. This has been one hotly-contested role, with actress-model Zoe Aggeliki rumored to be in the running, then reports coming out that Malone has the offer and is in early negotiations for the part. According to the latest Hollywood scuttlebutt, Malone will definitely maybe almost totally positively for sure (possibly) be playing the feisty ax-wielding District 7 tribute. Johanna isn't a huge part of the book, but she's kind of standout character because of her snark -- which is why there's been so much attention on the role. Sucker Punch's Malone has definitely been a fan favorite pick, so hopefully the rumors are true.
What do you think of the casting so far for Catching Fire? Who are you dying to hear about next? (Finnick?)

That's actually a pretty good choice for Wiress! I'm wondering who they'll cast as Beetee. I think Jim Parsons- Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory -would be AWESOME.
I was hoping they'd cast Kristen Bell as Johanna Mason. Kristen can play a damaged bitch quite well, she's the right age, and LOVES the Hunger Games books. I saw her on Conan right before the movie came out and she'd said she wanted the part...and that she loved the books so much, she had a Hunger Games birthday party.
Finnick? Justin Timberlake would have been perfect for Finnick if JT was still 24, but he's not. I like Garrett Hedlund for the part, though.
Otherwise, the casting has been DEAD on for the HG. Esp Woody and Lenny. Lenny IS Cinna, in every possible way!!
I don't know if I'll be able to wait almost another year and a half to see it! However, I think Ian Somerhalder should be cast as Finnick (as well as Christian Grey). Can't wait to hear more!
