Star Jones thinks she's on to Anderson Cooper. The Celebrity Apprentice alumna and ex co-host on The View went on the Today show and said that Anderson Cooper's coming out as gay is similar to when Oprah Winfrey came out and admitted to smoking crack and being pregnant at 14 -- Star argues that both revealed very personal info to draw in viewers and to get a ratings boost.
In case you think I'm making this all up, here's exactly what Star said:
He's a daytime talk show host and when the rating slip in daytime, the hosts tend to tell you lots of things about them. I remember Oprah said she smoked crack, Oprah said she was pregnant at 14 and considered suicide. There [are] times when you generate information for ratings.
Quickly realizing that she may have gone too far, she followed that up with, "Whoa! I shouldn't have said that! [To Anderson] I say bravo! Bravo!"
Here's the thing, Star may be right. Maybe Oprah and Anderson only exposed some personal details to generate interest in their shows. Maybe, but who cares. If Star's gotta a problem with it, she better check herself before she wrecks herself.
Star is a talk show host generating ratings from talking about talk show hosts generating ratings with controversial statements. Hmm. Seems like the pot is calling the kettle black here, doesn't it?
Controversy sells no matter if Oprah's pushing it, if Anderson's hawking it, or if Star's auctioning it, and I'm sure the three of them, each accomplished talk show hosts, knows that to be a plain and simple fact.
So if Star's going to call out Anderson, she better call out herself for doing the same exact thing.
Do you think Star's being a little ridiculous here?
