Did you catch the BET Awards last night? Whitney Houston was honored with a spectacular tribute featuring Brandy, Monica, Gary Houston, Cissy Houston, and Chaka Khan -- and it gave me chills.
Mariah Carey got so emotional introducing the tribute, saying that the first time she heard Whitney's voice, she was mesmerized. "Just an unknown budding singer myself, I was captivated by the power in her range, the richness of her tone, and her unique ability to wrap a lyric in emotion." Watch the tribute and you'll thrill to some of the most talented, powerful voices in music today -- and remember the hits that made Whitney a legend.
Monica's "I Love the Lord" was just gorgeous. And then Brandy sang "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" as a salute to her mentor. Whitney's brother, Gary, sang "Where You Are" and Whitney's mother, Grammy award-winner Cissy, dedicated her heartbreaking "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to her "Nip." Chaka Khan (who is looking amazing these days) finished with "I'm Every Woman."
People were especially excited about Brandy's performance. She was expected to sing a tribute to Whitney when she performed live at The Factory in Los Angeles shortly after Houston's death. But she did not, saying she would have been "an emotional wreck" if she'd tried. And who can blame her! Time has healed Brandy's heart enough that she gave the most spirited, life-affirming tribute you could ever want. Whitney would have been proud.
Oh Whitney! We wish you were still here, but as long as we have your music, you'll never really be far.
