Mary J. Blige Shouldn't Have Apologized for 'Racist' Chicken Ad (VIDEO)

by Linda Sharps on June 29, 2012 at 12:16 PM

Mary J. BligeEvery now and then, a celebrity gets busted for saying something you might describe as racially insensitive. Like when John Mayer said, "If (I) really had a hood pass, you could call it a  n***er pass. (…) My dick is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f***ing David Duke cock." Or when Ashton Kutcher channeled his worst Apu-from-Kwik-E-Mart accent in that Popchips ad.

Of course, some celebrities just go the full offensive nine yards, like that night when Seinfeld's Michael Kramer lost his damn mind during a standup routine and started screaming, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f***ing fork up your ass. Throw his ass out. He's a n***er! He's a n***er! He's a n***er!" Or, you know, everything Mel Gibson's ever said while drunk.

Out of all the stars who have ever been caught up in a racial controversy, though, I don't think I've ever heard anything as crazy as the crapstorm over Mary J. Blige's Burger King commercial.

Back in April, Burger King released a commercial that featured Mary J. Blige singing about chicken snack wraps. Now, before I even tell you anything about what happened next, I'd like you to watch the ad:

That exact commercial caused quite a stir online, with critics saying that the ad was disrespectful, racist, and stereotypical. There was so much backlash, in fact, that the spot was pulled just days later, with Burger King citing a licensing concern as the reason.

We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial. We hope to have the final ad on the air soon.

Notably, it never aired again.

The craziest thing of all? This week, Mary J. Blige actually APOLOGIZED for the ad:

It was a mistake, but I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that. It was sold to us that I would be shot in an iconic way ... It hurt my feelings. It crushed me for like two days (…) I want to apologize to everyone who was offended who thought I would do something that was so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that. I thought I was doing something right.

Okay. Okay okay okay okay. I realize I may not exactly be an authority on the subject of racism, but … this is insane, right?  The ad is offensive because Mary J. Blige is singing about chicken? Does the Burger King crispy chicken snack wrap really represent years of oppression and slavery? Isn't it more racist for the critics to have instantly connected a woman of color with a food stereotype in this way? SHOULDN'T WE ALL GET A GRIP AND WORRY ABOUT REAL PROBLEMS, FTLOG?

Really, the only thing about the ad that seems remotely embarrassing for Blige is the fact that it's dumb and cheesy and makes her look like she's about five minutes from begging to be on Dancing With the Stars. But racist? No. I don't get it. Not even a little bit. Frankly, I can't believe she apologized for it instead of telling her critics exactly where to cram their moral outrage.

Do you think this ad is racist?

I'm not being snarky or trying to be insulting but I really do not understand why this ad is racist. It seems pretty typical burger king to me and there was nothing racist I noticed. Can someone explain why it would be considered racist?

Yeah, I thought there would be some crack at the end about black people and chicken that would justify the hooplah... but nope. It's a silly ad and I would have have never seen the oh so obvious racism in it if nobody pointed it out. *eyeroll*

Full disclosure, I'm a woman of color and I didn't get the big deal either. Frankly, I've never understood this stereotype because I've never met a person in my life who didn't like both fried chicken and watermelon. Why was this ever a "black" or racist thing? In full agreement with the author, the racist part was the big deal made out of a black woman singing about a chicken snack.

The right thing to do would have been to get a white girl to sing about a chicken wrap and not give the job to Mary J because she's black. Wait....

once again, the over sensitive few mandate for the majority. i don't get how it's racist, or why even chicken is considered racist. i'm from the south, and let me tell you - i don't care WHAT color you are, EVERYBODY down there loves some fried chicken!

    1. Everyone loves fried chicken. Everyone. If you don't you will be locked away somewhere and force-fed fried chicken everyday until you learn to love it.

    2. I agree that the only thing about this that is racist is that some "race warrior'' decided to go; "oh my god they are making a black woman sing about chicken."

    3. This commercial is not racist, its ridiculous.

Um. It was a little cheesy, but most burger king ads are. I don't get the racist thing though. Is it supposed to be racist because a lot of black people like chicken so it's stereotypical to have a black woman sing about chicken? Or maybe because she was only singing about the chicken and the white guy actually got the chicken, so it symbolized that black people can't have what they want? Or maybe because a lot of white people like chicken too so having a black lady sing about it gives the impression that only black people can like chicken? I'm just confused. Which race is this supposed to be against? Or maybe it's supposed to be anti-asian or anti-Hispanic, since I didn't see either of those races represented in the ad? Lol! It was a dumb ad, but not racist.

First let me say that I also agree that the entire "racist" ad Mary thing is blown out of proportion. HOWEVER, I also understand why it would cause protest. "Coon" imagery was VERY popular at the turn of the 20th century (long before most of us were ever born or recall) and was designed to depict blacks as dumb, animalistic sub-human savages with a strange obsession for stealing and consuming vast amount of chicken and watermelon. For more background, read this http://www.authentichistory.com/diversity/african/3-coon/5-chickwatermelon/index.html The BKC ad, taken out of context, is reminiscent of this stereotypically coon behavior... This is not a justification of the outrage, just a quick historical explanation for those of you who simply didn't understand why persons subjected to the stereotypes mentioned above may get upset at such images potrayed in mainstream media.
