Scarlett Johansson Isn't Right for '50 Shades of Grey' Movie

by Maressa Brown on June 13, 2012 at 3:31 PM

scarlett johansson Ever since Bret Easton Ellis started tweeting up a storm and suggesting that he write the screen adaptation of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey, people are actually taking the American Psycho writer and Ellis' Fifty Shades movie casting ideas quite seriously. In his tweets (which have since been removed from his Twitter account), Ellis asserted, "Thinking more conventionally for Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey...Scarlett Johansson or Kristen Stewart."

Oh, jeeze.

KStew's the obvious choice (you know, being that Ana Steele was originally Bella Swan). But it was only a matter of seconds before someone in H'wood had to go and suggest ScarJo!

We know everyone's obsessed with her. She's glamour and sex personified. I even understand the obsession with her so much more than Angie Jolie, because she's got the feminine, sensuous curves. So of course it would be HOT to see her in a movie like Fifty. But it can't happen ... because she's all wrong for the part!

ScarJo, who has played precocious and mature for her age (even when she was a teen!), is now even more sophisticated as a divorced 27-year-old. She's absolutely no naif. She's the Joan Holloway Harris of Hollywood for crying out loud! AKA the opposite of Ana Steele.

Granted, she's also an actress, so it's her job to portray a character who might be much different from who she is and who we think of her as, but still. There's a little something called believability. I couldn't see Scarlett pulling off a clueless but ultimately eager-to-learn virgin. Kristen Stewart on the other hand? She's basically built her career around playing that stereotype. But who knows -- she may not necessarily be the best choice either. In the end, as much as some would love to see either Scarlett or Kristen as Ms. Steele, we might be better off with Ana being played by an unknown.

Would you want to see Scarlett as Ana? Kristen? Or a totally unknown actress?

I agree with Lilias. I haven't read these books nor do I plan to but I was interested in the movie roles but that language turns me right off. Jr high-ish much?

Scarlett has to much sex appeal. She just isn't right to me. Honestly (and I like Kristen) I don't think she should do it either. Neither seem just right for it.

I've read the books. You have to get past the language. Younger females in my office says the "f" word like it's always been a part of the vocabulary, lol. But the story is very good. Very romantic. Sure it's porny but look at the tv shows nowadays. As for who should play Ana. It's no brainer. It's Bella Swan inspired, Kristen of course. Once people see her movie On The Road, people will see how perfect she will be as Ana.

i think Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars would be the perferct as Anastasia Steele and Alex Pettyfer from the movie Beastly would definitely make a great Christian Grey
