Mark it on your calendars, zombie fans: October 14, 2012. That's when the third season of The Walking Dead is scheduled to premiere, and from what AMC has teased us with so far, it's sounding interesting. Verrrrrry interesting.
Much of the buzz around season 3 has had to do with The Governor, a MAJOR scary ultra-antagonist in the comic series. Casting for the role was announced at the end of season 2, but today the network released an image that gives us our very first look at British actor David Morrissey in full Governor mode.
If you want to avoid any and all spoilers or talk of past seasons, it's probably best to click away now—otherwise, let's get to it! Here's a peek at the bad guy who's going to make life even WORSE for our intrepid Walking Dead survivors in the upcoming season:
Okay, I can't lie, my initial reaction is something along the lines of WTF, that's not what he's supposed to look like at ALL. I know, I know, nothing's more annoying than a comic book purist, and it's not like the TV version has been completely faithful to the original storyline (the CDC visit, search for Sophia, and Shane's relative longevity are all unique to the show, among a number of other things).
But still, The Governor was SUCH an iconic character in the comics, it's strange to see him looking so differently. I mean, here's how he looks on paper:
Kind of more Danny Trejo than David Morrissey, wouldn't you say?
My guess is that someone decided that this character would have more depth if his villainy wasn't immediately obvious, but who knows. It's interesting that Michonne (the hooded figure who saved Andrea in the season two finale) looks much as she did in the comics, but The Governor has a new spin—at least in this particular photo.
At any rate, it's still exciting to get a glimpse of the the evil that's to come, and if you're been wondering whether or not AMC has the balls to really make this character as nasty as he is in the comics, the author of the graphic novels, Robert Kirkman, assures us The Governor won't be a tamer version onscreen:
The Governor in the show is definitely going to be The Governor in the comic. I think that he's definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He's definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.
Aw yeah. With Shane gone, it's sounding like we're going to have an even more twisted element to keep us on edge among all the zombie-dodging, and after a season that was half-crippled by Sophia (RIP and all that, young 'un, but we got REAL sick of looking for you) this is great news.
What do you think about how The Governor looks? Are you stoked for season 3?
