'Teen Mom' Kailyn Lowry's Opinion on Gay Rights Gives Us Even More Reason to Love Her

by Maressa Brown on May 10, 2012 at 4:41 PM

kailyn lowryWhen North Carolina passed their ban on gay marriage earlier this week, Facebook and Twitter blew up with passionate commentary. Lending her voice to those of us who were truly disheartened by the decision was Teen Mom Kailyn Lowry. She tweeted, "It's 2012 & we're really banning same-sex marriages?"

Sadly, Lowry had to confront quite the nasty response from some Twitter followers after she posted her query. Some accused her of "putting down" North Carolinans. But in response, she declared, "I'm atheist, I believe in gay rights & I KNOW I'm a good mom. #judgeme This is 2012, #acceptdiversityalready!" Wow! BRAVO, woman!

Usually, it drives me mad when a celeb -- especially a reality star -- gets preachy about any of the major political issues of the day. I simply assume that (unless they're someone who is clearly involved in a hands-on way like Brangelina, George Clooney, Jennifer Garner, and Ben Affleck, etc.) that they should probably just stick to their day jobs and not get up on a soap box about what's going on in Washington. But every now and then, someone like Kailyn comes along and surprises me by articulating her thoughts on a controversial topic in a passionate, informed way.

As it turns out, Kailyn Lowry's no stranger to the cause, having taken some glamour shots for the "No H8" campaign a while back. And if her outspoken tweets can make young people more aware of how ridiculous it is that we are still arguing about same-sex discrimination in the year 2012, more power to her! The woman's obviously using her celebrity for good, which is more than plenty of reality stars can say. Gotta love her even more for that!

How do you feel about Kailyn standing up in support of same-sex marriage?

Go Kail! I saw the pictures she did for No H8 with Isaac, she's beautiful, her son is adorbs, and it was for a great cause. A few of the teen mom girls did the No H8 Campaign too. I think she is great and should continue to stick up for gay rights!

#freedom of speech. I respect gay rights, we all have free will and are able to choose what we want to be. Do I support it? No I don't.

Well like she said she's an atheist. 2012 or not still doesn't make it right. So it's good that the ban passed. People today are ignorant and sometimes naive with topics like this and will always have an opinion which is fine, at the end of the day I put it down to lack of knowledge.

I do not support gay marriage. Marriage is defined as a man and a woman.

Well Misty, it doesn't effect you either way if two men or women get married now does it? You can disagree with it all you want, but how dare anyone think they can tell everyone else what to do.

If you are going to be preaching about not supporting things because of the bible you better be damn sure you are perfect.

yea it is 2012 where diversity should be accepted but this is a world full of hate and freedom of speech and for everyone to think there isnt going to be controversy over same sex marriage is just over rated cause no i dont have a problem with it at all as a matter of fact im all for it but that doesn't mean the next person is and i think we shouldn't hate the next person just cause they dont live the same life style you do live and let live simple as that and for all those going by what the bible says come on now yeah it say marriage should be by man and woman but then it also say thal shalt not judge.. and the famous he who has not sined shalt cast the first stone now come no one can do that so if u don't agree with it that fine move along and don't hate them cause of who they are they are not asking you to join them they are asking u to accept the fact that they deserve the same rights as the next person

@Kat, you say you "respect gay rights," but don't support gay marriage. You do realize that by denying gay people the right to marry, you are denying them their rights. Ergo, you are NOT respecting gay rights, you are doing the exact opposite. You're just saying you respect them, but why don't you put your money where your moth is and ACTUALLY respect gay rights.

@Sarah, wtf? Lack of knowledge? What are you talking about? I think it is YOU who lack knowledge, YOU who are ignorant to think that it's OK to discriminate against a minority group when we're supposed to be a more tolerant, enlightened society in 2012.
