When North Carolina passed their ban on gay marriage earlier this week, Facebook and Twitter blew up with passionate commentary. Lending her voice to those of us who were truly disheartened by the decision was Teen Mom Kailyn Lowry. She tweeted, "It's 2012 & we're really banning same-sex marriages?"
Sadly, Lowry had to confront quite the nasty response from some Twitter followers after she posted her query. Some accused her of "putting down" North Carolinans. But in response, she declared, "I'm atheist, I believe in gay rights & I KNOW I'm a good mom. #judgeme This is 2012, #acceptdiversityalready!" Wow! BRAVO, woman!
Usually, it drives me mad when a celeb -- especially a reality star -- gets preachy about any of the major political issues of the day. I simply assume that (unless they're someone who is clearly involved in a hands-on way like Brangelina, George Clooney, Jennifer Garner, and Ben Affleck, etc.) that they should probably just stick to their day jobs and not get up on a soap box about what's going on in Washington. But every now and then, someone like Kailyn comes along and surprises me by articulating her thoughts on a controversial topic in a passionate, informed way.
As it turns out, Kailyn Lowry's no stranger to the cause, having taken some glamour shots for the "No H8" campaign a while back. And if her outspoken tweets can make young people more aware of how ridiculous it is that we are still arguing about same-sex discrimination in the year 2012, more power to her! The woman's obviously using her celebrity for good, which is more than plenty of reality stars can say. Gotta love her even more for that!
How do you feel about Kailyn standing up in support of same-sex marriage?

Athiest or not - same sex marriage should not be banned.
Texas might not accept same-sex marriages in the state or recognize them (which i hope they eventually have a V8 and change that...) but I live hear and I see no problem with that and I thank the Lord that we havent actually BANNED them.
I think Kailyn did a great job and I admire her for standing up in her beliefs.
Personally - same sex marriages do NOT effect anyone but the two people who are being married. Just like me, a strait person, marrying my fiance in August has NO effect on anyone else but me and my fiance!
I am a Christian and yes i read the bible, blah blah blah. But things HAVE changed - tons of stuff was origionally banned in the bible that people do now...such as drinking alcohol and being near a woman on her period....so, bible thumpers? stick it. There is nothing wrong with two people who love each other wanting to have a piece of paper saying theyre commited for life
oh dear, that should have been *HERE not HEAR....
WTG Kailyn! I believe that marriage is a human right and should be about two people loving eachother and wanting to commit to eachother NOT about sex/gender. If you dont like same sex marriage then dont marry someone of the same sex! 2 people getting married does not harm anybody else and it has no effect on anybody else's marriage.
Good job Kailyn! My husband and I specifically requested any religious phrases in our wedding ceremony be removed. 50 years ago the hoopla was directed at interracial marriages, 50 years from now the bigots among us will find something else to try and oppress another group over. Sadly, in 2012 our society has yet to get over our superiority complex. Thank you for coming out as Atheist and speaking for LGBT rights.
People keep saying marriage is only defined as a commitment between a man and a woman? I think that has a lot to do with ignorance....
