The Wanted Talks Smack About Britney & Christina & It's Brilliant
The Wanted, for those who are unfamiliar, is a British-Irish boy band comprised of five handsome young men named Max, Siva, Jay, Tom, and Nathan. They were formed through mass audition in 2009 by a British casting/A&R company, and they've released two wildly popular studio albums. Siva is the ex-model, and Jay is the one with a non-identical twin brother.
I can tell you all this because now that they've publicly dissed Christina Aguilera AND Britney Spears, they're getting a ton of U.S. press and I actually know who they are. Unlike, say, a week ago when I'd never heard of them.
So is this singing sensation a bunch of a-holes for talking smack about their entertainment industry elders—or are they crazy like a hand-picked managed-talent corporate-creation fox?
The boys started their personal PR campaign last week when they appeared on The Voice, after which band member Tom Parker described Christina Aguilera in less than glowing terms:
She's a total bitch. She might not be a bitch in real life, but to us, she was a total bitch. She just sat there and didn't speak to us. Wouldn't even look at us.
Parker followed up with a fantastically weaselly apology ("We shouldn't have said it, to be honest with you. We just think manners cost nothing, you know what I mean?"), and that probably would have been the end of that, except they immediately turned around and ripped into Britney Spears.
In an interview with a New York radio station on Monday, The Wanted's Siva Kaneswaran (remember, he's the pretty one) decided to share a story about touring with Spears in November of 2011, despite having "signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened."
According to Kiva, the boy band got the diva treatment from Britney and her security team, who insisted that they avert their gaze as Britney exited her changing room:
I was in the hallway with my tour manager. Basically, we were looking with a laptop, trying to get WiFi ... facing the middle of the hallway. [Britney's] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall ... We turned around and I faced a wall for about 10 seconds until she got really far away.
Jay McGuiness (he's the …. uh, the one whose last name sounds like a beer—wait, no, TWIN BROTHER), hurriedly insisted that once they were allowed to look upon the magic that is Britney, everything was cool:
But honestly when we actually met her person to person, she was so down to earth.
Britney's rep, who probably had to life-coach himself through the ridiculousness of having to issue a statement on this topic, said,
What's even more interesting than the false allegations they made is the fact that they have claimed to be picked on by two female pop stars in just a few days. Look out, Lady Gaga — there are still three days left this week.
Lady Gaga? I don't think so, champ. It seems to me this boy band has a vendetta against the Mouseketeers. WATCH YOUR BACK, TIMBERLAKE.
Who knows what the truth is behind either of these rumors, and really, it doesn't matter. Whether or not Xtina is a bitch or Britney has Medusa-like powers unless she's wearing her special contacts, the point is that The Wanted is getting press for telling their little stories. In a world where boy bands have a built-in lifespan, who can blame them for making the most of their 15 minutes? Even if they sort of come off sounding like a bunch of douchebags, at least they're FAMOUS douchebags.
What do you think of The Wanted's recent comments? Refreshingly honest, or just plain obnoxious?
